U.S.: NYC Bus drivers want no part of Occupy Wall Street arrests

  • There’s NYPD brass with guns on buses saying ‘Move the bus, this bus is now under the control of the NYPD. What room to protest is there? It’s not a transit supervisor you’re dealing with.
  • New York Transport Workers Union Local 100 President John Samuelsen • Discussing the way that the Brooklyn Bridge Occupy Wall Street arrests went down, particularly how the NYPD commandeered buses to arrest protesters en masse. The union is seeking injunctions (preliminary and permanent) against the NYPD to prevent them from doing this again. “The actions of the NYPD on Oct. 1, 2011, amounted to a seizure of the bus drivers,” the union’s lawyer, Arthur Schwartz, claimed in court. Will be curious to see how this goes. source

  • 5,500 SEPTA workers are on strike in Philly, which means no bus or train service for you this sunny morning
  • 3 a.m. the time SEPTA announced the strike, which seems lame because now thousands of commuters are screwed source

U.S.: Post-crash, why being a commuter in D.C. will suck tomorrow

  • one As opposed to the automated computer controls the trains usually use, all trains will be operating in manual mode tomorrow.
  • two The crash happened on the Red Line, by far the busiest line and the main downtown line, ensuring that commutes will be a pain.
  • three Those who use Maryland’s MARC commuter rail lines will also be in trouble, as the Brunswick Line is suspended indefinitely.
  • four Sure, buses will be running to replace the trains, but Red Line trains hold up to 1,000 people. Your average Metro bus holds 50-60.
  • five And finally, the intangible. Anytime a major crash like this happens, fear sets in. Tensions flare. Careful tomorrow, guys. source
