Tech: First Google Voice, now health care? Apple’s app bans get political

  • I feel like politicians already have a megaphone and Apple is making it worse instead of making it easier for a regular guy to get an application into the store.
  • iPhone app developer Red Daly • Describing his frustration with Apple declining his app iSinglePayer for political reasons. The app, which explained to people the benefits of a Canada-style health care system and gives those users ways to contact their representatives, was blocked by phone specifically because it pushed a political opinion. For Daly, he says it was defeating because he “went to the app store because I felt like I didn’t have much of a voice in other spheres.” Eventually, all these arbitrary bans are going to catch up with Apple. • source

Biz, Tech: AT&T plays with fire, messes with the infamous 4chan

  • Anonymous is not amused. If you don’t know what the image board 4chan is, just imagine a giant board of internet nerds who have fun being disruptive. (Like the internet should be, if you ask us.) If you don’t know what AT&T is, just imagine a giant telecommunications company who has fun making disruptions for iPhone customers. Reports came out today saying that AT&T blocked access to a number of boards on 4chan, which means that AT&T has just opened up a can of worms and might find themselves under nerd attack. Good job guys! Expect your front page to have a disturbing image on it within the next day. source

Tech: Blocky wants to kill spam on Twitter – AND do it in pink

As someone who gets lots of spambot followers, we really dig this idea, but worry about false positives. And the fact that its maker likes pink so much. source

World: China blocks access to Twitter, Facebook, proves they’re total douches.

  • Following the deadly riots in Xinjiang, the government is reportedly blocking all the fun stuff on the internet. I mean, Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube? That’s a lot of people’s plans for Saturday night summed up right there. Not to mention all those, um, human rights issues too. Bummer. source

Tech: Yo Twitter & Facebook: What the F*&# is “session test”?

  • I get a Session Test every time I try to install the twitter app. I finally gave in and joined twitter and I can’t use with FB. How many days does it take to fix a bug. And who or what is Session Test?
  • Roy Moskowitz • An (understandably) annoyed Facebook user who can’t integrate his account with Twitter because an application called “session test,” whose main purpose seems to be preventing Twitter functionality with Facebook if you’re a new user. Old ones don’t have any problems, but new ones get an error message that says “Error while loading page from ‘session test,'” which sounds like the most cryptic error message ever. And worse, neither company is racing to fix this problem. Screw you Bob McTest, whoever you are. • source

U.S.: Doctors are split on whether acetaminophen should be banned

  • I do not think eliminating combination products is necessary and that the vote to do so goes too far. Combination products, especially in caring for patients with chronic pain, are important.
  • Ohio State University-based Dr. Randy Wexler • Saying he feels that taking away drugs like Vicodin seems like a step too far. He’s not alone in thinking that, but not every doctor agrees with him. “I think that combo products are generally a bad idea,” said Dr. Elliot Krane of Stanford University. He would’ve liked to see the FDA put further limits on over-the-counter drugs, too. • source

World: Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says there’s no room for diplomacy

  • We will not allow anyone to negotiate with us outside the agency’s regulations and issues. From now on we will continue our path in the framework of the agency.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Regarding a proposal by the U.S. for the country to freeze its nuclear program. Quick third-grader translation: If you’re not a member of the club, we’re not listening to you. Nyah! • source

U.S., World: Obama to world: You don’t need to see those torture photos

  • Apparently, he was afraid of rocking the boat a little too much. The photos, which document the abuse of detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan by U.S. military, could tick off the Muslim world at large, Obama was told by his military advisers. So rather than cause a buttload of fresh drama, Obama chose to keep the photos sealed. Probably a smart move on his part. We can live without seeing photos of waterboarding. source
