U.S.: Six killed after tour bus rolls over near Phoenix

  • Jesus, that looks awful. This crash, which definitely shook the riders of this bus awake, took place at 5:27 a.m. PST just south of Phoenix. Beyond the six riders killed, the other fifteen passengers were taken to local hospitals, including five with injuries so severe that they had to be transported by helicopter. Our prayers go out to the people riding on this bus. source

Biz, U.S.: Many homeowners choosing to give up on their worthless mortgages

  • Since the beginning of December, I’ve advised 60 people to walk away. Everyone has lost hope. They don’t qualify for modifications, and being on the hamster wheel of paying for a property that is not worth it gets so old.
  • Scottsdale, Ariz.-based mortgage broker Steve Walsh • Regarding the depressing, sad state for many homeowners – many who giving up on their homes due to mortgages that cost more than the homes are actually worth. 4.5 million homeowners have homes that are worth just 25% or less than the cost they paid. Many are choosing to foreclose rather than stay stuck in a property they don’t want. source

U.S.: Recovery.org is looking a little inflated nowadays

  • Tons of stimulus aid went to nonexistent districts, the site says. Question: Do you know where Arizona’s 86th district is? Well, (surprise!) it doesn’t exist – for the record, Arizona only has eight districts. It got a lot of stimulus money, though, according to Recovery.org. The government had a lot of explaining to do about the errors, but let’s just say they’re getting fixed. And Joe Biden was stuck trying to explain the errors on “The Daily Show” last night. (He tried really hard to downplay the bad press.) source

U.S.: Father doesn’t know best: Iraq-born man attacks “Westernized” daughter

  • Classy, buddy. Police are looking for 48-year-old Arizona resident Faleh Hassan Almaleki after he allegedly ran over his daughter, Noor Faleh Almaleki, along with a friend. His apparent reason? He was angry that she had strayed from her traditional Iraqi values and “had become too ‘Westernized.'” Which is a classy way of responding to the situation, especially since Noor is suffering from life-threatening injuries. source

U.S.: America’s biggest prick … er, “toughest sheriff” investigated

  • He’s unconstitutionally acted to racially profile many persons in the community, persons who appear or are Latino.
  • ACLU lawyer Dan Pochoda • Describing why Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a big jerk who they’re suing for racial profiling. He’s also under investigation by the Justice Department for violating civil rights. This is the guy who puts people (including Charles Barkley!) in jail wearing old-school prison stripes and pink underwear. • source

Politics: The founder of Frommer’s Travel Guides attacks Arizona gun crazies

  • I will cancel any plans to vacation or otherwise visit in Arizona until I learn more. And I will begin thinking about whether tourists should safeguard themselves by avoiding stays in Arizona.
  • Frommer’s Travel Guides namesake Arthur Frommer • Discussing his displeasure with town hall protesters who carried loaded guns to events in Arizona. There’s no reason they can’t. It’s legal. And that’s Frommer’s problem. He feels that it sets a bad standard for travelers in the state for reasons beyond political. “I not only believe such practices are a threat to the future of our democracy, but I am firmly convinced that they would also endanger my own personal safety there.” • source

U.S., World: John McCain: Obama needs to be more forceful about Iran

  • He should speak out that this is a corrupt, fraud, sham of an election. The Iranian people have been deprived of their rights.
  • Sen. John McCain • Who coulda been in the position Obama is currently in, but instead is watching from the Senate. He feels that Obama is being too careful with his words and needs to outwardly support the Iranian people. • source

Offbeat: Police: Teaching your children to be armed robbers not a good idea

  • All of us should be disgusted by this. This is absolutely not how to raise your children.
  • Phoenix police Sgt. Phil Roberts • On the plight of Cynthia Roberson, who taught her children, ages 12 and 14, all the skills they needed to commit acts of armed robbery – 20 in all. The victims, mostly between the age of 13 and 20, were beaten and assaulted in an attempt to raise money for rent and car insurance. Roberson guilted her sons into it. Jesus. • source
