U.S.: Metro opens doors, sure, but they closed on DC terror suspect

  • dumb You’re a guy who has a crazy idea to blow up parts of the DC Metro system, because that’s a good idea and stuff.
  • dumber You end up working with people you think are members of al-Qaeda, offering up significant details on your plans.
  • dumbestYou find out that they’re members of the FBI. Farooque Ahmed, this is your life. Don’t mess with the DC Metro. source
  • » And yes, we know: This is a serious situation. Lots of people could have died. But here’s our feeling on the matter. We’d rather be brash and fearless-sounding than give into the kind of FUD that these sort of threats encourage. That’s what terror suspects want.

World: In Pakistan, drones reportedly kill German citizens with extremist ties

  • Do these guys have ties to the European terror threats? That’s our question. Generally, when the U.S. has drones go on the attack in Afghanistan or Pakistan, it takes a couple days to figure out exactly who got hit. This time, however, they knew very quickly. The drones nailed a group that included at least four people with German citizenship and reported extremist ties. Americans are keeping tight-lipped about any further details in the case, but the timing obviously leads to a lot of big questions. source

Politics: Obama calls Koran burning an al-Qaeda “recruitment bonanza”

  • You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan. This could increase the recruitment of individuals who’d be willing to blow themselves up in American cities or European cities.
  • Barack “not a cat” Obama • Describing why Pastor Terry Jones’ whole “Burn a Koran Day” is a “recruitment bonanza” for al-Qaeda. Let’s face it. It’s the kind of thing that will piss off tons of people and might push a few towards extremism. Happy, Terry? You got the president to talk about you, and unlike every other time Obama brings up culture-clash issues, he didn’t sound like a smart guy making a stumble. source

World: Khuram Sher: Terror suspect previously terrorized “Canadian Idol”

  • This guy right here? Terror suspect. No, really. Khuram Sher, who was arrested early Thursday in Ottawa, may have thought a little differently about Western culture a couple of years ago. The self-proclaimed Hilary Duff fan sang Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” for the bemused judges, who also learned that Sher also likes “hockey, music, and acting.” What they didn’t learn is that he might have ties to al-Qaeda. Count your blessings that he didn’t win. source
