U.S.: 8 of 9 “despicable,” “cowardly” NYC hate crime suspects arrested

  • These suspects deployed terrible, wolf-pack odds of nine against one, which revealed them as predators whose crimes were as cowardly as they were despicable.
  • NYC Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly • Regarding the recent hate crime allegedly committed by nine gang members against three gay men in three separate attacks last weekend. We won’t go into all of the details of the brutal attack, but we’ll note that it’s bad enough that the suspects allegedly went out of their way to clean up the crime scene – painting walls, removing carpet and even dumping bleach down the drains. Honestly, that speaks volumes of how bad it was. Yikes. Eight of the nine suspects have already been apprehended in a crime mayor Michael Bloomberg says “sickened” him. He hopes their speedy arrests will let others know that people who commit hate crimes in the city “will go to jail for a very long time.” source

Politics, U.S.: Hey, the deficit’s actually getting smaller! Yay!

  • $125 billion decrease in the deficit over the last year source
  • » Of course, if you listen to a lot of conservative candidates this year, you probably wouldn’t know it. For example, Alaska’s Joe Miller proclaims, “the federal budget deficit was $1.4 trillion last year and is on track to be that, or more, this year.” Then again, Miller has already proved himself to be not the most responsible voice on fiscal issues, so perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Miller’s financial qualms aside, perhaps keep this number in mind next time a Republican decries Obama’s reckless government spending.

U.S.: Chris Christie’s N.J. rail tunnel cancellation = Shaky political ground

  • New Jersey’s governor just gave public works projects a body blow today. Why, you ask? Well, Chris Christie, frustrated over the possibility of putting taxpayers on the hook for billions in cost overruns, ordered the shutdown of a massive, long-in-the-works plan to build a passenger rail tunnel under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York City. While his reasons are fiscal conservative to the core, let’s just emphasize a few things about what he’s costing his state by shutting down the largest public works project in the country:
  • $8.7 billion, the estimated cost of the New Jersey rail project
  • $3
    billion
the amount the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had already promised for the project
  • $300
    million
the amount New Jersey may have to pay back the federal government for the unfinished project
  • $2.7B the anticipated cost overruns of the already-in-progress public works project
  • 6,000 the number of jobs the project would have given New Jersey construction workers
  • 20 the number of years the wheels had been turning on this highly-anticipated project source
  • » And lots of people are pissed, too. Even considering the costs of this project (which had bipartisan support, by the way), the potential benefits could’ve been long-term and might’ve paid for themselves. Homeowners lost out on higher home prices. Commuters lost the possibility of less-annoying commutes. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood sounded like he wanted to shout in Chris Christie’s face so loudly it ripped the governor’s skin off. And Christie, while bolstering his support among the right, could hurt his re-election chances because of the perceived flip-flop. This is dangerous ground no matter the fiscal benefits.

U.S.: Obama stops the foreclosure smorgasbord from becoming worse

  • what Obama said he would veto the Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act, a minor bill  which passed both houses with little debate.
  • whyThe timing is suspect – as a side effect, the bill could allow mortgage lenders to rush through foreclosures more quickly from outside states. source
  • » Why this is a big deal: In recent weeks, politicians (especially Democrats) have been attacking mortgage lenders for using aggressive, shady techniques to push through foreclosures – a process which was impeded after the companies’ documentation came under question. A leading mortgage firm, Ally (better known as GMAC) recently had to halt all evictions in 23 states as a result of these documentation problems – revealed by one of their own employees in sworn testimony. The big story there, though, is that the smorgasbord of eviction is still on in 27 other states.

U.S.: Federal judge upholds key component of health care reform

  • Much maligned by opponents of health care reform, the individual mandate is the aspect of the law requiring everybody to purchase health insurance (except those who can’t afford to). It’s also the part under attack by reform opponents, who find it unconstitutional and hope to bring down the entire law by way of judicial activism lawsuits against it. Unfortunately for them, a federal judge in Michigan has just upheld the individual mandate’s constitutionality. In her words, here’s why:
  • Interstate commerce
“The decision whether to purchase insurance or to attempt to pay for health care out of pocket is plainly economic,” Judge Steeh said, reaffirming  that the individual mandate falls within Congress’ right to regulate interstate commerce.
  • It affects everyone Whether or not individuals purchase insurance has “clear and direct impacts on health care providers, taxpayers, and the insured population who ultimately pay for the care provided to those who go without insurance.”
  • A unique market
“The health care market is unlike other markets. No one can guarantee his or her health, or ensure that he or she will never participate in the health care market. Indeed, the opposite is nearly always true.” source

U.S.: The Supreme Court has a field day with the Westboro Baptist Church

  • This is a case about exploiting a private family’s grief. The question is: Why should the First Amendment tolerate exploiting this Marine’s family when you have so many other forums for getting across your message?
  • Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg • Asking the best question of the day to Westboro Baptist Church lawyer (and member) Margie J. Phelps, who represented the church in their case against the family of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, whose funeral they protested way back in 2006. While wanting to favor free speech as much as possible, the justices clearly struggled with this case, with many trying to find a narrow path that allowed them to limit the private-person-damaging hate speech of a group like Westboro while not affecting other kinds of speech. Fortunately, Phelps made it easy on them, suggesting that wounded soldiers shouldn’t have a cause of action if they’re being protested against by a group similar to hers. At that point, the justices jumped on her. It’ll still be a number of months before we know how this one plays out, guys.  source

Politics, U.S.: National Rifle Association endorses Dems, angers Repubs

  • 14 Democrats in competitive districts endorsed by the NRA source
  • » The National Rifle Association normally breaks for the Republicans. However, they have an endorsement policy that’s giving insurgent GOP candidates a headache: if the incumbent and challenger in an election are equally gun-friendly, the NRA will endorse the incumbent. The GOP hopes to win seats from moderate Democrats in conservative districts; however, since those Democrats are incumbents who support gun rights, they’ll be the ones receiving the NRA’s support. The result? Republican challengers who could benefit most from the NRA’s endorsement won’t be getting it.
