Tech: TechCrunch sells to AOL: Now they can focus on writing

  • They run the largest blogging network in the world and if we sold to them we’d never have to worry about tech issues again. We could focus our engineering resources on higher end things and I, for one, could spend more of my day writing and a lot less time dealing with other stuff.
  • Techcrunch founder Michael Arrington • Explaining why he agreed to let AOL buy his company. Simply put – he thinks AOL’s content vision is really compatible with what the company already does. But the really interesting part? TechCrunch will be ensured editorial freedom from AOL. Arrington says that AOL CEO Tim Armstrong thought “was important that we feel free to criticize AOL when we think they deserve it. And the agreement we signed with AOL fully reflects this.” That’s a big deal. Who knows how much TechCrunch sold for? Who cares? Having such a strong backbone of support makes the whole thing worth it. source

Tech: Kindle for the Web: Amazon figures out how to turn e-books into embeds

  • Hey, it’s like Hulu! This impressive little embed right here brings the joy of reading to a blog near you, and works as a great form of advertising. Amazon has proven time and time again that while they sell the Kindle, they’re really platform-agnostic. They just want readerssource

Tech: RIM brings the PlayBook, proves the BlackBerry’s not dead yet

  • This is the first iPad competitor we’ve seen that actually seems like it might have a real shot of taking on Apple. The fact that it’s from RIM, who has been seen as a bit of an also-ran in the phone market, is a bit surprising. The reason? The OS is QNX, meaning it’s a total break from the past for the BlackBerry maker. It also has a better name than the iPad. Hello, Playbook. source

Tech: More magazine-like Web design: Is this a good thing?

  • Is this what people want their web to be? It strikes me as an anti-Craigslist, an anti-Google. It’s a magazining of web content beyond anything we might have expected. It’s attractive! But it’s also a whole lot less.
  • The Awl writer Choire Sicha • Writing some pretty harsh words on both the recent New York Times opinion page redesign and the beta version of Gawker currently floating around. Maybe we’re more designerly than writerly, but an evolution away from Craigslist and Google is probably a good thing for the Web. That said, we’re bigger fans of the NYT opinion page than Gawker, which comes off a little too busy with that standing ad/menu design. The way that stories were listed before made us feel like we weren’t missing anything. (Disclosure: For what it’s worth, after months of iPad use, we find the format of Pulse to be immensely more useful than that of Flipboard, mainly for the reason Sicha suggests.) source
