  • Daniel Ellsberg • Speaking about Bradley Manning this weekend, a weekend which saw him getting arrested twice this weekend while protesting Manning’s imprisonment — once near the White House and once at Quantico brig. Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers, says that Manning’s treatment in solitary confinement is a form of torture. “It’s giving lie to President Obama’s promise to end torture,” he said. “It’s happening right here to an American soldier in an American brig.’’ Ellsberg also gave a big up to P.J. Crowley, who argued against Manning’s treatment before getting forced out by the State Department. source

You could buy Michael Bay and give him a position in your cabinet with the amount of fundraising you could garner with a move like that. source

  • Way to go, Joint Chiefs chairman: The way Adm. Mike Mullen guards his answers about Operation Odyssey Dawn is a sight to see, and it’s good to know that he got a guy like David Gregory — who won’t call you out on your BS — as a talking post. His careful answers, which sidestep any talk of timetables or what’s next, seem to focus on the idea that Gaddafi will ease up under a high level of pressure. (But they have no plans to force him to step down.) This kind of approach hasn’t worked with Gaddafi anytime in the last 40 years. Why now? source

  • Meanwhile, while Glenn Beck and Lawrence O’Donnell are arguing/agreeing about whether or not the Japan nuclear crisis is going to end the world (it’s not), thousands have been killed, thousands more are currently without a roof over their head, and millions more could face electricity issues for months after the Japan quake seriously damaged the power grid. Good to see they’re keeping things in perspective by arguing over who’s right. source

  • Well … that’s reassuring. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this morning that a stalemate in Libya was possible. He also noted that the mission, by the way, has a short, narrow scope, which, again, contradicts its name. source

On the heels of his Comedy Central roast, which he ended with an awkwardly obvious political self-promotion, Trump is now using dog whistle rhetoric to appeal to people who doubt the legitimacy of the President (the birthers, basically). This is, as it happens, not uncommon in the realm of Republican politics at this time- Mike Huckabee, however he might like to deny it, was doing precisely the same thing when he claimed Obama had a Kenyan upbringing. So, an early sign that Donald Trump knows how to pander to those racked with distrust and conspiracy theories. source

Politics: Waste of time: House GOP pushes to hur NPR’s federal-funding

  • Taxpayers should not be on the hook for something that is widely available in the private market. I wish only the best for NPR. Like many Americans, I enjoy much of their programming.
  • Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) • Attempting to make his final dagger-push into the body that is the federal funding of NPR. The bill “prohibits NPR and its local affiliates from using federal dollars to produce programming or purchase content from other member stations. Affiliate stations could only use taxpayer money for administrative costs, under the bill.” It’s being fast-tracked for a vote later on today. Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me! The House GOP’s going to push for something that’s not going to pass the Senate, Obama’s not going to sign, and is going to waste everybody’s time yet again. Check. Come on. Your party can’t complain about Obama picking his NCAA bracket if all you’re giving him to work with are stupid things that won’t go anywhere. source

She may have a shot at winning this time, so long as she doesn’t do something silly, like suggest that Hispanic students are actually Hispanics in disguise. source
