Politics: Obama on GOP Pledge: Whatever, stupid jerks

  • That’s not a prescription for a better future. It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the GOP’s new “Pledge to America,” which promises to repeal many of the things Obama has done. He’s ticked that the GOP, for example, wants to roll back health care. In regards to the recession in general, Obama had this to say: “We have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done.” source

Politics: Shepard Fairey: Obama didn’t turn out to be like the poster

  • There’s a lot of stuff completely out of Obama’s control or any of the Democrats’ control. But I think there’s something a little deeper in terms of the optimism of the younger voter that’s happening. They wanted somebody who was going to fight against the status quo, and I don’t think that Obama has done that.
  • “Hope” Poster creator Shepard Fairey • Admitting that Obama’s potential hasn’t been met in the nearly two years he’s been in office. While he still largely supports the president, he doesn’t feel that if in the same position today he would’ve drawn the “Hope” poster. Beyond the politics, maybe he’s just a little frustrated by the whole thing – see, he’s been embroiled in a pretty rough copyright infringement suit with the Associated Press for a while. source

Politics: Even conservatives don’t like the GOP’s latest manifesto

  • I want to endorse it, but it’s so milquetoast that it proves to me that these guys just aren’t ready to lead.
  • Andrew Roth, of the leading conservative group Club For Growth  • On the “Pledge to America,” the GOP’s plan for governance in the event that they win the House and/or Senate.  source

Politics: “U.S.A., Number 1”: Stephen Colbert stumps for migrant farm workers

  • I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, sliced by a Guatemalan . . . and served in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian.
  • Stephen Colbert • Speaking at today’s House subcommittee hearing on immigration in the U.S. The point being made? That working farm labor jobs, as many illegal immigrants do, is really freaking hard. Colbert knows. He’s tried it before. He suggests it’s a job you, too, should try. “Americans may consider taking jobs once conditions are better,” Colbert said. “I trust both sides will work on this together in best interests of the American people – as you always do. U.S.A., Number 1.” source

Politics: Stephen Colbert ignores John Conyers at House meeting

  • Way to make yourself look like a jerk, John Conyers. We know you’re a powerful member of Congress and all, but you seriously can’t deal with the guy talking and actually drawing attention to an important issue? Wow. source

Politics: Colbert’s House subcommittee hearing statements “not insulting”

  • It’s not quite clear which way it’s going to come out, but it’s not going to be the same bombastic style you see on TV because there’s a certain decorum, and he’s aware of it. It will be funny, but not insulting.
  • An aide familiar with Stephen Colbert’s testimony • Describing what he’s expected to say in a House subcommittee hearing about immigration. Colbert will be appearing with United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez, whose “Take Our Jobs” campaign encourages people to do the same work as migrant farmers. Only a handful of people have tried so far, one of them being Colbert. source

Politics: Shocker: Democrats play it cautiously, blow golden opportunity

  • NO! Dems won’t vote on tax cuts prior to the midterms source
  • » Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, top Democrats have inexplicably decided not to vote on the Bush tax cuts before the midterm elections. Doing so would have been a sure-fire win, as it would have a) ended the Bush tax cuts, b) fired up the progressive base, and either c) extended the middle-class tax cuts, or d) forced Republicans to vote against extending the middle-class tax cuts. Those are all good things for the Democrats, yet true to their party’s name, they’ve decided to play it safe, and put the whole thing off until after the election. It’s almost as if they want to lose the House.

Politics: Different poll from yesterday: Andrew Cuomo waaaaay ahead in NY

  • 57%
favor Andrew Cuomo for New York governor
  • 24% favor weird Tea Party dude Carl Paladino instead
  • 19% support other candidates like Rick Lazio, or have no opinion source
  • » Yeah yeah, we know: Yesterday we ran a similar poll which suggested Carl Paladino was very close in the race; well, this different poll completely disagrees with that. What are ya gonna do?
