Politics: Last night’s New York gubernatorial debate? Circus.

  • I’m with Jimmy. The rent is too damn high.
  • New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo • FInding common ground with fellow candidate Jimmy McMillan of The Rent is Too Damn High Party during last night’s debate in New York. The debate was notable for one reason – all of the candidates were there. The New York Times buried this farce on page A21 of the paper. They should’ve blown it out if you ask us. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Sorry we’re late; here’s an awesome soap opera

  • A C-Span telenovelaWe’re sure Jonah Goldberg’s new book is great, but around the 1:45 mark, he’ll be upstaged by some lovers’ dissent within his panel. Todd Seavey and Helen Rittelmeyer used to date. They don’t anymore, and Todd clearly has some issues with that. It’s easily the best thing ever aired on C-Span.
  • Bathroom buddies? Joe Miller was on Fox News today telling his side of the whole blogger-arrest incident. He lets out a piece of info in this Neil Cavuto interview which he hadn’t mentioned before – which is that the Alaska Dispatch co-founder followed Miller into the bathroom. He was attracted by the beard.
  • ghost of Spitzer’s pastWe were on the hunt for some good “Parker Spitzer” clips, but then managed to notice the new Spitzer doc coming out next month. Just in time for the one-month mark of the new CNN show! Oh yeah, remember when Seth mentioned the political operative with the Nixon tattoo? He’s in this clip. With the tattoo.

Politics, U.S.: Sharron Angle knows how to get the Hispanic vote

  • I don’t know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me.
  • Sharron Angle • To a room of Hispanic teenagers, at the Hispanic Student Union. Well-played! She also mysteriously claimed that she’s been called “the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly.” Anyone want to try and make sense of that? source

Politics, U.S.: Joe Miller bleeding support in Alaska

  • 7% decrease in Joe Miller’s support over last month source
  • » For a while, Joe Miller had it in the bag. But things have changed. It started when incumbent Lisa Murkowski, having lost the Republican primary to Miller, announced that she’d run a write-in campaign. Polls then began showing erosion of Miller’s popularity, with his negatives increasing by 6% in the last month. Then, news broke last night that Miller’s private security detail handcuffed and detained a reporter at a town hall meeting. Now, Nate Silver says that “any ordering of the top three candidates is possible.” This is a race to watch on November 2nd.

Politics, U.S.: Carl Paladino likes to hug it out

  • The vast majority of people in Buffalo know what it’s like to be hugged by Carl, even those who don’t want it.
  • Carl Paladino’s campaign manager • In an frank admission to the New York Times. Paladino is quickly becoming known for his “grandfatherly species of full-body bear hug,” during which hugees often “find themselves lifted off the ground.” His campaign jokingly refers to his robust hugs as “the mind meld.”  source
. Resistance, where it exists, is futile: Mr. Paladino is so enthusiastic a hugger that huggees will occasionally find themselves lifted off the ground.

Politics: Annoyed Joe Miller has guards detain Alaska Dispatch founder

  • Hey Joe Miller, what you got to hide? You seem a little wary of talking to reporters for some reason, even to the point where you had a bunch of security guards detain the owner of a news site, who you discount as a “liberal blogger.” Why? What is the gain in it for you? It makes you seem like kind of a jerk. “While I’ve gotten used to the blog Alaska Dispatch‘s assault on me and my family, I never thought that it would lead to a physical assault,” you say. Yeah, yeah. Fact of the matter is, you just had your cronies detain a legitimate member of the online press because he annoyed you. source

Politics: Former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders: Legalize pot and stuff

  • What I think is horrible about all of this, is that we criminalize young people. And we use so many of our excellent resources … for things that aren’t really causing any problems. It’s not a toxic substance.
  • Former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders • Arguing the case for pot legalization. But before you pot-heads get too excited about having a mainstream, respected ally, we just want to point out how she lost her job. Elders, who served (controversially) under President Bill Clinton, is known for saying things like this. She once argued in favor of teaching masturbation in schools – an argument that caused her firing just fifteen months in. We wonder what our boy Dr. Koop thinks about all this. source

Politics, U.S.: Sharron Angle spends a lot, raises a bit more

  • $14 million amount raised by Sharron Angle’s Senate campaign last quarter. Sounds like a lot, right?
  • $12 million amount spent on fundraising by Sharron Angle’s campaign in the same quarter. Whoops! source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell wants it both ways with the GOP

  • We’re asking the National Republican Senatorial to help us shine a spotlight on my opponent’s negative record. We’re hoping that the National Republican Senatorial Committee will help us. But it’s two and a half weeks left, and they’re not.
  • Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell • Talking on ABC’s “This Week” about how she can’t get help from the national GOP in fighting Chris Coons. But the same day as the interview, she had this to say to a local rotary club: “If you want a senator who has had to fight her own party and is still fighting her own party, please vote O’Donnell for U.S. Senate.” Hmmmmmmmmm. One point to make here is that she’s kicking Coons’ butt when it comes to spending, including getting the maximum donation from the NRSC. But she’s still losing. source
