Culture: Conan’s new promo: Take a drink from the hose, if you dare

  • Conan needs a desk, a gardening hose, and a crapload of water. That’s it. He doesn’t even need Andy Richter anymore. The hose is the new Andy Richter.

Culture: “The Social Network” on track to top box office this weekend

  • $8 million made by the Facebook movie in its first day alone source
  • » So how real is it, anyway? Not particularly. Writer Aaron Sorkin took artistic license with the idea of the film. While many of the plot points are true (Sean Parker did leave the company after a cocaine arrest, for example), the tone of many of the characters, as well as the school itself, didn’t match those of the Harvard students who saw the film. And cyberlaw expert Lawrence Lessig, while praising the film itself, took issue with the lessons that Sorkin took from the storyline, both with its characters (“I know Parker. This is not him.”) and with its feel of what makes the Web tick (“Sorkin boasts about his ignorance of the Internet. That ignorance shows.”). The movie is very good and one of the year’s best, but don’t let the wool get pulled over your eyes. It’s fiction based on fact.

Culture: “The Hobbit” looks to emerge from development hell

  • WITH PETER JACKSON!!! For the love of God. About time. The “Hobbit” movies, which have been hotly anticipated eved since the last “Lord of the Rings” movie came out, looks like it’s actually going to happen as part of a brokered deal between MGM and Warner Bros. Why the trouble? Simply, the main studio behind the films, MGM, has been in dire financial straits for months and is currently in a state of ownership flux. The movie already lost a director in the form of Guillermo del Toro, but on the plus side, if the movies start up by the end of the year, “Rings” director Peter Jackson wlll be back behind the helm. Win-win all around, right? source

Culture: RIP Stephen J. Cannell: Here’s how you know who he is

  • This guy. This typewriter. This guy created some of the most well-known shows of the ’70s  and ’80s, but you probably know him from one of the many variations on this logo. Stephen J. Cannell, who died yesterday at 69, was behind “The Rockford Files,” “The A-Team,” “21 Jump Street” and “Wiseguy,” among other shows. He knew how to throw a piece of paper from a typewriter. No word on the state of the dog from the “Sit Ubu Sit” logo. source

Culture: RIP Tony Curtis: One of film’s most iconic stars, dead at 85

  • An icon of film, with the roles to show for it. Tony Curtis spent a lot of time in the movies – he worked in them for around 60 years, and had a variety of roles under his belt. He starred in classics such as “Some Like it Hot” and “Spartacus.” He was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy and an Oscar. And he had a daughter, Jamie Lee, who has become a huge star in her own right. That’s the legacy that Tony Curtis leaves. He died today at 85. source

Culture: Reviews: “The Social Network” receives epic amount of praise

  • » What Roger Ebert says: If you only trust Roger Ebert like us, you can feel free to know that this is in fact the movie of the century: “David Fincher’s film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its brilliant hero, but in the same way. It is cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive.” So yeah, we’ll be at the theater on Friday wearing a “Free Zuckerberg” shirt.

Culture: Greg Giraldo’s dead, and he has nothing nice to say about it

  • An insult comic, in the modern sense. It’s been a tough month for hard-living acid-tongued comics. First, Robert Schimmel died at the beginning of the month, and now Greg Giraldo has died of an accidental prescription drug overdose at the gone-too-soon age of 44. While Giraldo had a career outside of these roasts (among other things, he was a panelist on “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn,” a featured player on numerous other Comedy Central shows, and most recently a judge on “Last Comic Standing”), this is the setting where he really, truly shined. R.I.P. man. We’ll keep insulting people for you. source

Culture: “Star Wars,” which we’ve never seen, getting the 3D treatment

  • good George Lucas’ Lusasfilm is going to release the “Star Wars” series in 3D starting in 2012, meaning it’ll be back in theaters.
  • bad They’re starting with “The Phantom Menace.” Dear Mr. Lucas, you should probably forget the last three movies existed.* source
  • * Disclosure: The staff of ShortFormBlog is basing that comment on the comments of many other people, because we’ve never actually seen any of the “Star Wars” movies. Out of principle.

Culture: Hells Angels, circa 1965: Life Magazine’s photo archives strike again

  • That’s quite the badass. In 1965, Life Magazine documented the trials and tribulations of the Hells Angels, but never printed the images. Fortunately for us, they decided to print them now, years after the magazine faded away. Really awesome, but wouldn’t it be great if Life Magazine itself were bringing great new photos like this one to the world? source
