Culture: Harold Martin Smith’s gun tied to Ronni Chasen’s murder

  • saturday Police claimed last week that “Harold Johnson,” an ex-con bicyclist who shot himself to death while on the run, may not have been Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen’s killer.
  • wednesday Police claim the man, really named Harold Martin Smith, killed himself with the gun used in Chasen’s murder, making him the likely (but not slam-dunk) suspect. Police suspect a robbery gone bad. source

Culture: Elizabeth Edwards: During the worst of times, she found silver lining

  • It was that attitude we’re going to always look for the silver lining. It is who we are as people and we’ll continue to do it.
  • Elizabeth Edwards • Speaking in 2007 about her breast cancer, which eventually led to her death this morning. Maybe some of this goes into ploy territory, but the fact of the matter is, Edwards worked 16-hour days while taking chemotherapy pills during her now-estranged husband’s campaign – after which, things got even worse in her personal life. A woman who has had this much bad stuff happen to her, while still looking for that silver lining, isn’t a victim. She’s a hero. Remember that, guys. source

Culture: Elizabeth Edwards somehow upbeat despite sobering prognosis

  • I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful.
  • Elizabeth Edwards • In a Facebook post where she talks about the spread of her cancer. She reportedly only has weeks to live. So, to remind you guys, this lady spent like a decade propping up John Edwards’ political career only to get dumped when she had cancer so the former vice presidential candidate to shack up with the mother of his out-of-wedlock baby? And now she’s going to die soon? How unkind is this world? The fact that she has a single positive bone left in her body, let alone the sincere heart shown here, is amazing. And John Edwards is a crappy human being who doesn’t deserve any of the success he’s had. (Sorry, we were angry. And now we’re very sad. We have a lot of respect for Elizabeth Edwards. You should too.) source

Culture: Shocking injury on German television overshadows Justin Bieber

  • bad Last night, Justin Bieber had to cancel a planned performance on German television at the last second. (So did the reunited Take That.) Always a bad day when that happens to the Bieb.
  • worse It was because a guy trying an insane stunt involving spring-propelled stilts, Samuel Koch, failed at his attempt on the show and is severely injured, possibly paralyzed. Yikes. source

Culture: Can Mel Gibson make comeback with “The Beaver”? (See the trailer)

  • As comeback roles go, you don’t get weirder than this. Mel Gibson with a stuffed beaver, somehow getting his mojo back. Is that “Salisbury Hill” we hear in the background? No? Well, it should be there. Or Peter Gabriel should be getting royalties for this trailer. source

Culture: Pearl Harbor, in train form (minus the bombs … and the island)

Pearl Harbor happened in Hawaii, on an island. Yesterday, near Los Angeles, on a train … they tried to relive the moment, complete with actors. Fascinating. source

Culture: Normal evening for the LAPD: Suge Knight arrested again, released

  • A person who’s been arrested multiple times, you see if he has any outstanding warrants. And he did.
  • LAPD Sgt. Shawn Ruda • On last night’s arrest of Marion “Suge” Knight, who was wanted on a minor traffic warrant, which is a lot less than what he’s been wanted for in the past. Knight, who hasn’t been relevant since his biggest star, Tupac Shakur, died back in 1996, has had a spotty police record ever since. For the current crime, he was released and will have to show up in court in a month or so. source

Culture: Here’s a photo of Ducktales because we wanted to post one

  • Last night we read about this utterly bizarre idea to have people change their Facebook profile pictures to those of cartoon characters … to help speak out against child abuse. Now, the connection there is tenuous at best, so we ignored it … until we realized we could post a picture of Scrooge McDuck on the site for no apparent reason other to amuse ourselves. So here it is. Ducktales! A whoo-hoo! Tomorrow, Chip ‘N’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. (OK, ok, because we know that there are hardcore types out there, we’ll note that this image predates Ducktales by a few years, and that the history of the Scrooge McDuck character is utterly fascinating.) source

Culture: Weight Watchers devotees collectively freak out about points

  • I don’t want to be forced to choose veggies. I do NOT like veggies or fruit. I feel like I am being forced to ‘diet,’ and that is what I DO NOT WANT.
  • Some whiny baby on a Weight Watchers forum • Complaining about the changes to the company’s well-known points system, which previously scored processed foods and unprocessed foods about the same way. Now, the new system encourages eaters to have fewer processed foods and as many fruits and vegetables as they’d like. Seeing a bunch of people on a weight-loss plan collectively freak out is kind of entertaining. source
