Culture: Charles Barkley lauds gay equality in sports, marriage

  • Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot. I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person. … I’ve been a big proponent of gay marriage for a long time, because as a black person, I can’t be in for any form of discrimination at all.
  • Charles Barkley • The Hall-Of-Fame power forward speaking out about homosexuality in sports, in the wake of Phoenix Suns President and CEO Rick Welts coming out in an New York Times story over the weekend. Barkley’s comments are earnest and worthy of notice, especially in recent weeks that have seen sexual orientation become a focal point in the NBA. The impetus of it all, to some extent, was the very public stance the league took when Kobe Bryant hurled a slur at an official. Bryant received a stiff fine, and to his credit to some extent, he later partnered with a gay rights group for public education. Then, Phoenix Suns players Grant Hill and Jared Dudley shot a PSA denouncing the use of “gay” as a playground insult (a move that invariably and depressingly got them called “gay” a lot via Twitter). It was on this recent foundation that Welts came out. Courage like this brings us ever closer to a more enlightened society, so simply, thank you. source

Culture: On Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mind-blowing out-of-wedlock bomb

  • So yeah, that was kind of an atomic bomb of a news story TMZ just dropped, eh? It says a lot that the revelation that Arnold Schwarzenegger had a child out of wedlock would be shocking if he was just a movie star. (Over a decade ago, but still.) Problem is, though, he’s a former California governor, and as a result, the standard is way higher. Plus, he was married to a Kennedy! Anyway, here’s the apology: “I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family,” he said. “There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.” Considering he’s done with political life, will this hurt his career going forward? Or will his now-revived movie career survive the revelation? (photo via the Port of San Diego‘s Flickr page) source

Culture: Too realistic? Thor promotional merch causes bomb scare

  • When overwrought commercialism goes wrong: So, we saw the movie Thor last week (didn’t terribly enjoy it), and amidst all the mythological melees and scowling Frost Giants, there was something that the good people at Acura wanted us to notice — that they are the official car brand of S.H.I.E.L.D., a monolithic government agency at play in the film. We didn’t notice this, as it happens, and perhaps to gin up some extra buzz, Acura produced these promotional “S.H.I.E.L.D. test kits,” a black box containing a bunch of toggle switches, nondescript liquids, and prominent use of the word “detonation.” You probably can see where this is headed. The FBI and ATF were called in to handle one such “kit” in a recent bomb scare in Ann Arbor, Michigan. source

Culture: Comeback of the day: The New York World’s digital makeover

  • Joseph Pulitzer’s baby gets a digital makeover: The New York World, a newspaper that initially published from 1860 to 1931, is an important historical paper. And now, thanks to Columbia University, it’s making a comeback in the form of a digital news project. How so? We’ll let the university explain: “New York World will serve both as a site, where citizens can learn more about how services are allotted and tax dollars are spent, and as a news service, providing stories, data and other information to local news providers.” So in other words, kinda like an East Coast version of the Bay Area News Project. Neat.  source

Culture: The Drudge Report: Still a juggernaut, 13 years after Lewinsky

  • I covered the Clinton White House in 1997 and 1998 and I would never have conceived that he would be an important player in the landscape 12 years later. He does one thing and he does it particularly well. The power of it comes from the community of people that read it: operatives, bookers, reporters, producers and politicians.
  • Politico co-founder John F. Harris • Expressing his disbelief that Matt Drudge’s Drudge Report is a juggernaut that reportedly drives a solid 7 percent of the overall news traffic online — far more than headline-grabbing social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook or Reddit. Why’s that? Simple. “[He’s] the best wire editor on the planet,” says The Atlantic Wire’s editor, Gabriel Snyder. “He can look into a huge stream of news, find the hot story and put an irresistible headline on it.” Even considering his conservative bent, his stone-age design and his low-key demeanor, the main reason Drudge is a success? He doesn’t change what works. Even if he runs what’s pretty much the Craigslist of journalism. source

Culture: Front page of the day features headline “Osama bin Wankin’!”

  • Today in newspaper front pages that remind you of the importance of tabloid journalism sometimes. The New York Daily News had a similar idea but with worse execution. (On a side note, Newseum, where we grabbed this page from, finally took the watermarks off their front pages — hopefully for good. We hope our campaign helped change their minds. We’d still like to see newspapers consider releasing their front pages under a Creative Commons license.) source

Culture: What Charlie Sheen thinks about his replacement, Ashton Kutcher

  • nice When asked to react to news that Ashton Kutcher would replace Sheen on “Two and a Half Men,” he had this to say: “Kutcher is a sweetheart and a brilliant comedic performer.” And he has way more followers than Charlie.
  • not-so-nice However, Chuckie had more to say to the producers of the show. “Enjoy the show, America. Enjoy seeing a 2.0 in the demo every Monday, WB,” he said. Hear that? That’s the sound of a man with a chip on his shoulder. source

Culture: Spider-Man musical: More previews than any other musical, ever

  • 30 number of preview performances the average Broadway musical gives before opening night
  • 146 number of previews “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has had so far … and more are coming source
  • » Spider-Man’s retooled web: After the show (a financial if not critical hit) took a three-and-a-half week hiatus to make some changes, fewer screw-ups are happening, Bono’s lyrics suck less, and one of the major characters former director Julie Taymor invented for the production got a major demotion. (The character was once the main villain; now it’s a mere guardian angel.) It’s all in an attempt to fight off the unbelievably high level of bad press the production currently has — what with its record number of preview performances and all. (That, by the way, is due to the fact that the play didn’t have an out-of-town tryout and has delayed opening night SIX TIMES.)

Culture: Public television icon Jim Lehrer’s leaving his anchor post

The guy’s been the anchor or co-anchor of a program like “Newshour” for 36 years. He’ll still remain on the show, but will mostly stay behind-the-scenes. Big ups, man. source

Culture: Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall feeling heat over Bin Laden tweets

The Pittsburgh halfback said this: “It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side.” He also doubted al-Qaeda’s role in 9/11. source
