Culture: Michaele Salahi + Journey guitarist Neal Schon ≠ Kidnapping. Lulz.

How you know you’re famous for being famous: Your claim to fame is gate-crashing the White House, and you get reported missing … but you’re really just hanging with the Journey’s lead guitarist. source

Culture: Pat Robertson: It’s OK to divorce someone with severe Alzheimer’s

  • I know it sounds cruel, but if he’s going to do something, he should divorce her and start all over again, but make sure she has custodial care and somebody looking after her.
  • Pat Robertson • Telling a man looking for advice that it’s OK to divorce someone — if they’re suffering from Alzheimer’s, which he refers to as “a kind of death.” Um … we really have no clue what to say about this other than that we wouldn’t do this ourselves. Sometimes, our boy drops some whoppers.  source

Culture: Anderson Cooper goes full-Oprah with talk show debut

  • Daytime’s new icon? Anderson Cooper brought his silvery hair and serious demeanor to daytime television today, just in time for a TV landscape lacking a new Oprah. Why the change? Well, according to Business Insider, Anderson Cooper’s primetime ratings on CNN have severely fallen over the last two years; they say that his new daytime talk show could help save his career. A few clips from his first show are already online; some of his first guests were members of Amy Winehouse’s family (not a bad get, by the way, Anderson!). In this clip, they say that her death was not caused by illegal drugs. source

Culture: Angry Birds: Educational? Uh, sure, why the heck not?

  • That’s why it’s only natural that today’s more tech-savvy educators are recognising the potential of using games as a teaching device in their classrooms.
  • Ntombezinhle Modiselle, a South African teacher • Defending the use of technology in the classroom.  This teacher is trying to recognize the fact that “today’s learners are the gamer generation.” We kinda think that the Atlanta teacher using “Angry Birds” to teach velocity and acceleration might be taking it a little far, though. What’s next, urban planning through “SimCity”? (OK, OK, you’re right, that’s actually a good idea) World War II history through “Call of Duty”? Statistics through one of the “Final Fantasy” games? source

Culture: Let’s change the subject, for kicks: J. Lo and Bradley Cooper eat DINNER.

  • Can celebrities just be friends? Apparently not. Jennifer Lopez and Bradley Cooper were seen having dinner together this weekend in Toronto. Sparks were flying and chemistry abounded. This could be some sort of PR stunt. It could be the start of a relationship, maybe. She could be Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. Or, it could just be pretty people enjoying each other’s friendship. Who are we to judge? And how do we manage to transition from a night filled with politics to celebrity gossip? We don’t know how we do it. source

Culture: Jerry Lewis’ absence doesn’t hurt MDA Telethon’s fundraising ability

  • $61 million the amount the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s yearly telethon made this year — the first year without Jerry Lewis as the host
  • $58.9 million the amount the annual Labor Day telethon made last year; Lewis had hosted MDA telethons in one form or another since 1952 source
  • » Drama over the big change: While Jerry Lewis had claimed that his appearance this year would be his last, he ended up not making an appearance at all, after the association appeared to fire him (or Jerry quit early) for some reason. He didn’t even make a cameo. Instead, a bunch of giant photos of Jerry’s face went up instead, and the show needed four hosts to replace the 85-year-old, one of which included an “American Idol” producer. So … the big question: Does the yearly telethon struggle from here, without Lewis at the helm?

Culture: Fox News columnist: Chaz Bono is a freak of nature

  • Chaz Bono should not be applauded for asserting she is a man (and goes about trying to look like one) any more than a woman who believes she will be happier without arms, has them removed and then continues to assert that she was right all along—her self-concept was that of a double amputee. Now, all is well.
  • Member of the “Fox News Medical A-Team,” Dr. Keith Ablow • In an unbelievably insensitive piece about Chaz Bono, the transgendered man who is about to become one of the latest contestants on “Dancing With the Stars.” Ablow, who goes on and on about how he disagrees with Bono’s choice, admits he will take heat for the article. “I already have for making similar statements in the past,” he notes. “So be it. I would rather be the one shouting ‘The Emperor has no clothes!’ than one of the happy-go-lucky villagers applauding the tragic parade.” Look, Bono is taking a lot of heat from conservatives for his decision to do DWTS, some of it clearly unnecessary. Ablow is just throwing chum in the ocean to whet the sharks’ appetite. source

Culture: Oh, Matthew Fox. This weekend was NOT a “Party of Five”.

  • jack, you have to go back. No, really. Matthew Fox tried tried to join a bachelor party in Cleveland on Sunday morning. (He’s in town shooting a movie.) The party bus driver didn’t recognize him as a celebrity; she did recognize him as the “guy who assaulted me.” “I don’t care that he is a celebrity,” she told a reporter. “Assault is against the law.” He was detained in a patrol car before being released to a friend. No, we don’t think he was Lost, either. We’re pretty sure we know how this saga ends. Bad move, Jack. source

Culture: Angela Merkel is Forbes’ most powerful woman in 2011

  • germany German Chancellor Angela Merkel received the top spot on the Forbes list of the 100 most powerful women in 2011. Merkel’s position as a leader in the EU has grown amidst the dire economic crises facing some other member states.
  • america The second-place spot was given to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, though she’s not the only politically minded American woman on the list — GOP candidate Michele Bachmann clocks in at #22, and Sarah Palin at #34. source

Culture: Pat Summitt on early-onset dementia: “Sometimes I draw blanks”

  • I just felt something was different. And at the time I didn’t know what I was dealing with. Until I went to Mayo, I couldn’t know for sure. But I can remember trying to coach and trying to figure out schemes and whatever and it just wasn’t coming to me, like, I would typically say, ‘We’re gonna do this, and run that.’ And it probably caused me to second-guess.
  • Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt • Describing the process that led to her diagnosis for early-onset dementia. Summitt, a 59-year-old legend who’s the winningest coach in college basketball history (men or women) doesn’t plan to hang it up despite the setback, however — she led her team to a solid 34-3 record last season, even as she was dealing with memory problems. She’s willing to change up her duties some to accommodate for the issues, but she’ll stay on the sidelines going forward. Good for her — and good luck as she keeps up the good fight. source
