World: Mumbai is on high alert, explosions may be terrorism

  • The entire city of Mumbai has been placed on high alert. I would appeal to the people of Mumbai to remain calm and maintain the peace.
  • Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram • Talking about the state of Mumbai after three explosions rocked the city. Chidambaram is saying this is an act of terrorism, but it’s unclear if that’s really the case – no organization has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack. It’s also unclear how many have been killed/wounded from the explosions — CNN is reporting over 20 dead and hundreds injured, while the LA Times says only 13 are dead and dozens more – we’ll continue to keep an eye on this for you. source

U.S.: Hasidic Jewish boy brutally murdered in Brooklyn

  • Leiby Kletzky’s body was found today. The eight-year-old had been missing for two days, and it turns out he was kidnapped walking home from day camp. His parents were waiting outside to meet him — but he got lost on the way home. This video shows him a few blocks off course, walking near a hardware store (he walks by after about 15 seconds in this video). Apparently, a short while after this video was recorded, someone offered to take Kletzky home, but kidnapped him instead. A massive search was launched, and when the suspect learned of how extensive the search was, he reportedly killed Leiby. His dismembered body was found in the suspect’s refrigerator and in a trashcan on a street. Horrific story. (via jvbrewer) source

Music, Tech: “New Pandora” does away with Flash and becomes more social

  • Pandora is getting rid of Flash. Their current site pretty much entirely runs on Flash, so a move to HTML5 is a big step for them, and as their site’s tech has gotten creaky over the years, a bit long-overdue. The moral of the story is that Pandora’s facelift looks really, really cool. Not to mention their renovations make the site more social, encouraging people to share music with their friends and making the entire process easier — it’s definitely something to look forward to, especially if you’re an avid desktop Pandora listener. source

Culture: RIP Sherwood Schwartz, creator of The Brady Bunch

  • Two of television’s most iconic shows came from this guy. Schwartz, who also created “Gilligan’s Island” and wrote for numerous other hit shows (and even did a couple of the theme songs for his shows), died early this morning at the age of 94. An Emmy winner for his vast contributions to television, he outlived most of the “Gilligan’s Island” cast. source

World: Libya update: Possible NATO ceasefire, Gaddafi may leave

  • ceasefire?NATO forces are considering a ceasefire in Libya for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan which begins Aug. 1. Critics of the plan are worried it could backfire, while NATO leaders are afraid that a continued bombing campaign could lead to backlash from the Muslim community.
  • withdrawal?Meanwhile, the French are saying that Gaddafi is ready to leave power — so that ceasefire might not be necessary. Negotiations between the French and Gaddafi have been difficult, but now it seems that the dictator is thinking about leaving. That would probably be best for all involved. source

World: South Sudan is getting their own currency

  • South Sudan is finally able to do things we take for granted. For instance, they played their first soccer game on Sunday evening. The other big thing is that they’re getting their own currency now. The South Sudan pound is going to have a picture of John Garang on it — he was a key player in South Sudan’s long and bloody quest to becoming an independent nation. They’ve actually had problems because their new currency wasn’t implemented sooner. It was difficult to pay salaries, since there hasn’t been any native currency to pay them with. It’s one of many problems facing the young nation. Luckily, this particular problem may soon go away. source

World: News Corp. hacking scandal spreads to second paper

  • worse Shareholders owning stock in News Corp have sued the company in the wake of the shutdown of News of the World. The shareholders own less than 1 percent of the company combined. They’re also suing because News Corp took over Shine Group, Ltd., a company owned by Rupert Murdoch’s daughter.
  • worser Another News Corp. paper, The Sunday Times, has been accused of using identity theft (“blagging”) to steal personal information from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, including information on Brown’s son — possibly leading to their early reporting on his cystic fibrosis. That means TWO papers are now implicated. source

U.S.: Picasso drawing thief caught thanks to cameras in a restaraunt

  • A couple of days ago, a man blatantly stole a Picasso drawing from a San Francisco gallery in broad daylight. Authorities didn’t expect to catch the thief, but yesterday, they got a break. Authorities spotted the suspect, Mark Lugo (shown left), with the help of surveillance cameras outside a restaurant he happened to walk by. He tried to mail the drawing, authorities say. However, before he could do so, authorities reached him first and recovered the drawing. The museum said they would tighten security as a result of the incident. (photos via ABC7News.com) source

Biz, Politics: Unemployment numbers show Obama’s major hurdle in 2012

  • 9.2%unemployment rate, which jumped last month unexpectedly
  • 18,000number of jobs added, which is straight-up anemic source
  • » Why this stinks for Obama: Early on in his administration, he said it wouldn’t go higher than 8.2%. While unemployment declined for a little while, it’s been steadily going up again. The Obama administration is trying to downplay the issue, but it’s proving difficult, and could prove his major flaw in the upcoming election. It’s an easy target for GOP candidates. Instead of talking about how he’s helped turn the economy around, Obama is going to have to fight back by saying how the Republicans will make it worse, and let’s face it: That doesn’t sound like such a great defense.

U.S.: Breakthrough Medicaid study proves its usefulness

  • 35% increased likelihood Medicaid users would go to a doctor
  • 15% increased likelihood they would use prescription drugs
  • 30% increased likelihood they would get admitted to the hospital source
  • » A new study with broad ramifications: The results of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s study may seem obvious, but the debate on whether or not to cut funding for Medicaid has long rested on whether experts thought low-income people would actually use the public form of medical insurance. The new study proves this is the case, and does it in an interesting way — rather than comparing the insured to the uninsured (a common tactic used before), the study treated Medicaid the same way researchers might treat a drug. The result? Fellow researchers are hailing the study as “historic” and say it’ll shape national health care debates for years to come.
