Copper prices hit a record high today, and one trader on the London Metal Exchange owns $3 billion in copper. Excuse us while we melt pennies in our garage. source

Culture: “Spider-Man” play’s negative buzz keeps getting worse somehow

  • I have to weigh in on Spiderman. They should put Julie Taymor in jail for assault! I know what it’s like to fall and get hurt in front of 2,000 people. It’s no fun, but at least it was the one time it happened. I hope whoever was hurt is ok and sues the sh– out of Julie, Bono, Edge and every other a–hole who invested in that steaming pile of actor crippling sh–!
  • “Rent” star Adam Pascal • Expressing anger over the “Spider-Man” Broadway show, which has faced multiple injuries since it started its previews. As of right now, shows are getting cancelled to improve safety, and director Julie Taymor is fighting some pretty nasty PR. “An accident like this is obviously heartbreaking for our entire team and, of course, to me personally,” Taymor said in a statement. The actor injured in the most-recent incident, Christopher Tierney, is reportedly doing better, but the negative hype is definitely hurting the show. (By the way, since you asked, we do think Bono and The Edge should go to jail – but not for this.) source

Politics: Dear Nina Totenberg: We shouldn’t have been so quick to judge

  • Jeesh, these folks need a life – and perhaps a touch of the Christmas spirit, as well.
  • Nina Totenberg • Explaining her meaning behind apologizing for calling something a “Christmas party” on PBS the other day. The explanation? She was actually ripping on the Department of Justice for calling the event a “holiday party,” essentially leveling the kind of criticism on them as bloggers leveled on her. Dear Nina: We shouldn’t have been so quick to judge. We’ll hold off until you say something outlandishly bad about Jesse Helms again. (thanks goes to hman‘s awesome tumblr for the link) source

World: WTF study: Early breastfeeding leads to better grades in school

  • 10% improvement in math and writing, two things we suck at
  • 8% improvement in spelling, something we suck at even more
  • 6% improvement in reading; we’re guessing we weren’t breastfed source

Biz: Revised numbers: GDP improves handily, but not fast enough

  • 2.6% third-quarter boost; good, but not good enough source
  • » What is “good enough,” anyway?: We’ll leave this assessment to someone who knows a little more about banking. “Growth really needs to be closer to 4% for a couple of years to bring down the unemployment rate,” said Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo. So, in other words, we’re getting there, but this isn’t cooking with gas. This is the pilot light on the oven staying out for an extended period. The economy needs a spark.

U.S.: Obama signs “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal; WHOOOOOOOOO

  • good Obama has signed the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” into law, saying that “No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie.” It’s a big emotional moment for gay rights.
  • better Lt. Dan Choi, considered the “face” of the repeal movement to many for his protests in front of the White House, was on hand at the Interior Department today – to watch Obama sign the bill. Nice. source

Politics: Mitch McConnell is a jerk who’s clouding the net neutrality issue

  • This would harm investment, stifle innovation, and lead to job losses. As Americans become more aware of what’s happening here, I suspect many will be as alarmed as I am at the government’s intrusion.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch “I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about” McConnell • Talking about net neutrality, which proves that he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. If only Ted Stevens were still alive to remind Mitch that the ‘net is a series of tubes. What happens to your own personal Internet when an obstructionist jerk like McConnell tries to favor large corporations over consumers? It won’t be like a dump truck. It’ll be like your own busted series of tubes that you’re paying out of the wazoo for. All because McConnell wants you to think that all government regulation is bad, even when it’s not bad. While this net neutrality policy is kinda weaksauce, it’s better than letting AT&T and Comcast regulate usage. source

Biz: Kinda like burglary: Are banks unjustly breaking into homes?

This lady right here, Mimi Ash, had all of her possessions in this vacation home thrown out and taken away by Bank of America. Including her dead husband’s ashes. Yeah. source
