World: South Korean civilians quickly escape North Korean shelling target

  • I’m very sorry to leave my hometown. Once it was paradise, now it’s hell.
  • South Korean homemaker Choi In-young • On being forced to leave Yeonpyeong Island in the wake of continued threats from North Korea, including the shelling earlier this week which led to the first civilian casualties since the Korean War ended. While Choi’s house survived, others were not so lucky. “All the windows in my home were knocked out,” she says. “My home is still safe, but I saw smoke from houses around me.” Can anyone decipher the collective paranoia North Korea has right now? source

U.S.: Looks like a job for Radioactive Man: FedEx loses radioactive barrel

  • normalFedEx regularly ships small amounts of radioactive material, within compliance of federal and state regulations. (We’re guessing UPS does the same thing.)
  • abnormal FedEx lost a big barrel of Germanium on one of its routes, causing a mad scramble. If it stays in its lead barrel, we’re safe. If not … hope you don’t find it. source

U.S.: Retired NYC fire marshal: I wanna kill Obama, then myself

  • It had been a good solid fifteen months or so. We were due for another one of these. Seems that Michael Bowden, a 77-year-old retired police officer and fire marshal who worked in NYC, had discussed a plan to kill Obama – and then himself – because he was not doing enough to help out African-Americans. (Bowden is white, by the way.) Police checked his Spartanburg, South Carolina home and found a ton of loaded semiautomatic weapons next to his bed, suggesting that he was well along with his plan. Obama has faced a handful of assassination plots like these, but generally it’s not because Obama is doing too little to help black people. So this is new. source

U.S., World: The U.S. really freaking angry with Wikileaks right now (again)

  • WikiLeaks are an absolutely awful impediment to my business, which is to be able to have discussions in confidence with people. I do not understand the motivation for releasing these documents. They will not help; they will simply hurt our ability to do our work here.
  • U.S. Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey • Loudly voicing his frustration with Wikileaks, which plans to release thousands of diplomatic cables in the next few days. Let’s just say that the U.S. is gearing up for the worst-case scenario, which involves them having to explain to its allies why it’s privately talking crap about them and revealing things that were told to them in confidence. source

World: Vladimir Putin may run for Russian president again in 2012

  • We will look at the conditions in society, in the economy and at the political situation and will take an agreed decision in the interests of the country.
  • Russian Prime Minister (and bizarro Obama) Vladimir Putin • On his plans for 2012. Putin, who was term-limited, let his successor Dmitry Medvedev run in his place in 2008, but might want the job back come two years from now. Anything to keep this man famous. We don’t care if he wins. Make sure he remains famous. source

Music: Shoot us now: Black Eyed Peas performing at next year’s Super Bowl

  • We can only hope that someone has a wardrobe malfunction. Not because we’re looking to see Fergie naked or anything (no interest, really), but because it might assure that another terrible modern pop act won’t follow in the wake of the Black Eyed Peas as the Super Bowl’s musical performer. (We even know the perfect spot, too.) After Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (who admittedly aren’t guilty of any cardinal musical sins themselves) unintentionally went naked in 2004, it’s been an old fogey’s game, most recently with The Who getting out of the retirement home to perform. We’re not sure what we dislike more – old rock acts performing years after their irrelevancy, or newer pop acts that simply suck. Call us when you get the Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend, Super Bowl. source

  • 600,000 the number of people worldwide who die each year as a result of second-hand smoking (cough, cough)
  • 165,000 the number of children killed each year by second-hand smoke; they’re most heavily exposed to it source
