Politics: Max Headroom: Harry Reid knows how to fire a shotgun

  • symbolic showdown On “Fox News Sunday,” Republicans Marco Rubio and Charlie Crist had a straight-up debate over the Florida Senate seat they both want. Crist is a moderate. Rubio is the Tea Party’s Great Cuban Hope. Part 1 is above, but the other two parts are also worth watching.

  • “Lamestream”? What?Sometimes, Sarah Palin says mean things towards people she doesn’t like, and yesterday’s epic Tea Party Woodstock thang yesterday was no exception. Palin used the not-nice phrase “lamestream media.” If she becomes president in 2012, her four years are gonna suck.

  • So, where was Harry?Harry Reid was the (negative) focus of the Tea Party event in Searchlight, Nevada yesterday, but he wasn’t around. Instead, he was at an NRA event, shooting off a gun, just in case he needed self defense when he tried to go home later that night. Better safe than sorry.

U.S.: Obese people study: They’re like drug addicts, except with food

  • Obesity may be a form of compulsive eating. Other treatments in development for other forms of compulsion, for example drug addiction, may be very useful for the treatment of obesity.
  • The Scripps Research Institute researcher Paul Kenny • Describing a study they did which showed that overweight rats reacted to food the way that drug addicts react to drugs. They found that as the rats gained weight, a dopamine receptor that signified reward went down. So, you know what this means, obese people. Start doing drugs. Replace one addiction with another. (Actually, don’t do that. That’s terrible advice. But then again, we’re not advice columnists.) source

Music: Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” easily replaced by Korean girl on iPhones

  • She shows you how she does it, then she does it. And then you watch it and it makes you feel inferior. Don’t you feel inferior? We know we do.

U.S., World: Obama in Afghanistan: Breaking bread with Mr. Karzai

  • Somebody just got invited to the White House! Hamid Karzai hasn’t seen Obama in person since the dude was an ambitious, aw-shucks Senator with a dream and a piece of Shepard Fairey propaganda to give him facial recognition. Now Obama’s president, Hamid’s in his second term, and Obama isn’t very happy with the Afghan government in general. But he’s willing to work on it. So, this May, Karzai gets to come to D.C. While you’re here man, we recommend going to see 3OH!3 at the 9:30 Club. They’re playing the night before you’re supposed to visit Obama. They play those really annoying songs you hear on the radio. source

U.S.: Obama and Afghanistan: It’s one of his strongest issues

  • 53% of those polled think that Obama kicks butt at Afghanistan
  • 35% think he totally sucks at this
    Afghan War thang
  • 12% fell asleep while the pollster was asking them a question
  • » How does it compare to everything else? He does so well with it that even Republicans can get behind him on it. 37 percent of self-identifying GOP members and 50 percent of indie kids (er, independents) back him on the issue. In the case of Republicans, who give him no better than 15 percent on many major domestic issues, that’s pretty good. So, yeah, this visit to Afghanistan is really good PR for him right now. source

U.S., World: Obama to U.S. troops in Afghanistan: This visit’s for you

  • There is no visit that I consider more important than this visit I am making now. My main job here today is to say thank you on behalf of the entire American people.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking to troops about his unexpected but busy visit to Afghanistan today. The Oval Office Overseer stopped in and said “heeeyyyyyy” unexpectedly, but not without reminding the troops why they were there – specifically that the U.S. hadn’t chosen the war. “I’m confident all of you here are going to get the job done in Afghanistan,” he said. source

Politics: Anti-Fred Phelps people: This guy created your template

  • When the Westboro Baptist Church comes to town, follow this template. A few weeks ago, University of Illinois-Chicago student Jason Connell decided to take on the homophobic Kansas church diplomatically. Across the street from a WBC protest, he set up a spot to donate money to organizations the church opposes in the church’s name. The effect? It completely neuters their power. Clever. source

World: Pope Benedict doesn’t plan to cower in fear due to church scandal

  • The nature of this issue is bound to attract media attention and the way the Church responds is crucial for its moral credibility.
  • Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi • Regarding the Pope’s response to the whole church sex scandal. The Pope had to deal with this on a pretty rough day – Palm Sunday – and did so in somewhat vague terms. He spoke of using God’s help to lead one “towards the courage of not allowing oneself to be intimidated by the petty gossip of dominant opinion.” All of this, of course, suggests that the Pope won’t be bullied the the court of public opinion, despite the scale of the scandal. source
