World: Italy’s billionaire prime minister offers his homes to quake victims

  • Silvio Berlusconi is Italy’s second-richest man. Victims of the devastating Italiian earthquake, which killed hundreds and left thousands more without homes, will be getting some help from P.M. Silvio Berlusconi. “I will do what I can too, by offering some of my houses,” Berlusconi said at a state funeral for the more than 200 killed. 17,000 survivors are currently living in tents, so it’d be a bit of an upgrade for them. source

Offbeat, U.S.: He wanted concert tix, so he confessed to witnessing a murder

  • They jumped him, tied him up. Everyone was like throwing eggs and stuff at him and burning him with cigarettes and just giving this guy back what he’s been giving us for all those years.
  • “Carl” • Who called a Phoenix radio station Wednesday night that was having a confession contest to win concert tickets. He said he witnessed his friends kill a bully in the Cincinatti area in 1988 when he was a teen. The FBI is investigating his claims. “Carl,” by the way, asked for Kelly Clarkson tickets. • source

U.S., World: The captain tried (and failed) to escape the Somali pirates

  • U.S. officials say Richard Phillips is still safe. Phillips attempted to escape into the water but was recaptured by the four gunmen currently holding him hostage. Despite this, the government has every reason to believe Phillips remains unharmed. In other news, Maersk would not say how its crew regained control of the ship from the pirates – they say they’ll launch an investigation later. source
