Offbeat: The Washington Post agrees: The DC Metro makes free-jazz music

  • We’ve been saying for months that there is a great found-sounds album to be made from the incidental noises from the DC Metro’s escalators. Some of the escalators sound like they’re performing free-jazz. It appears the Washington Post agrees with us, because they wrote an article about it. Nobody steal our idea, OK guys? source

  • » Worst-case scenario: OK, OK, this storm hit the South first, so we can’t really complain that much, but at the same time, this storm could have a ripple effect on large swaths of the country. And it makes one regret taking an Amtrak up to Connecticut from D.C.

Politics: Texas gets its first gay marriage, with the help of Skype

  • This is how you get around gay-marriage laws. Mark Reed and Dante Walkup have long been in a committed relationship, and decided that they wanted to get married. Problem is, they live in Texas. So, here’s what they did: They had their ceremony in Dallas, but back in marriage-legal DC, they had marriage-equality activist Sheila Alexander-Reid officiate the wedding over Skype. (They got their marriage license ahead of time.) So they got married among friends, while still obeying local laws. Clever. Hopefully their union isn’t challenged. source

U.S.: Did gunman in DC area with very specific agenda repeat himself?

  • To our friend shooting at various Marine-related buildings in the DC Area: You should stretch out. We understand that you may have something against the Marines. That’s why you’ve shot at all those Marine-related buildings. But you’re starting to repeat yourself. Last night, someone shot at the National Museum of the Marine Corps for the second time in a month. (Just a guess, but: It was probably you.) But you should shoot other empty military-related buildings in the middle of the night for no good reason. That’s right, buddy, leave a bigger paper trail so that the police can figure out who you are and why you’re on such a bizarre caper against buildings that didn’t do anything to you. (Also, just to help police: Consider leaving a business card.) source

U.S.: Someone in the D.C. area with a gun doesn’t like the military

  • one Some guy decided to shoot up the National Museum of the Marine Corps last week.
  • two Two days later, someone shot at the Pentagon using the same gun as the first shooting.
  • three Someone shot a Marine Recruiting Station in Northern Virginia. Is it related? source
  • » Why this is disconcerting: Well, among other things, the random nature of the shootings is reminiscent of the D.C. sniper shootings. While the person has hit no people yet, lots of people remember the hysteria around those shootings. Oh, and we can’t forget the fact that the military is involved. Tip to shooter: Find a better way to protest.
