U.S.: TSA warns of implant-based bomb concealment

  • The new normal in airport security? It was announced today by the TSA that terrorists might try to surgically implant bombs into themselves to bypass airport checkpoints, a warning which seems to imply further heightening of security could be coming. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney explicitly said that the warning “does not relate to an imminent or specific threat.” That said, that a terrorist could hide a bomb in their body is fairly obvious, so whatever intelligence they’ve gleaned must be enough to drag this out of the realm of the hypothetical. The TSA has also advised international airports to tighten their security. source

World: Protip from State Department: Don’t enter North Korea, idiots

  • The state Department timed its new note to just after the end of Jimmy Carter’s visit. In case you’re wondering, you shouldn’t enter North Korea unless you’re Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. “The North Korean government will prosecute and sentence those who enter the DPRK without proper documentation,” the State Department says. “North Korea’s penalties for knowingly or unknowingly violating North Korean laws are much harsher than are those in the United States for similar offenses.” Carter left the country with Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who was sentenced to eight years of hard labor for entering the country. He entered reportedly for humanitarian reasons. source

World: Not helpful when necessary: Chile sacks naval scientist over tsunami

  • A lack of warning leD to hundreds of deaths. Surprising as it may seem, but there was never a nationally-issued tsunami warning in Chile. As a result, Commander Mariano Rojas, who was in charge of the Chilean navy’s Oceanography Service, has been sacked from his job. “People are dead as a result of the government’s mistakes,” said Miguel Rivera, a city councilman in Hualpén, a coastal town directly affected by the tsunami. “Sending out the word in time would have saved a lot of lives.” source

U.S., World: Cashing in on misery: Beware Haiti relief scams, guys

  • 250 people were victimized in a 2005 scam revolving around a Hurricane Katrina relief fund
  • $48,000 was bilked using PayPal by two Texas brothers; they were convicted in 2007
  • Some people have no soul, apparently. Consumer watchdog groups (as well as the Feds) are warning that scammers could try to take advantage of the Haitian earthquake tragedy, playing on emotion to try to bilk you of your money. Scammers like these showed up during both the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. So keep an eye out, kids. It could be bad. source

U.S., World: Robert Gates has all sorts of nice things to say to North Korea

  • Dependent on the charity of the international community to alleviate the hunger and suffering of its people, North Korea’s leadership has chosen to focus the North’s limited energies and resources on a reckless and ultimately self-destructive quest for nuclear weapons.
  • Defense Secretary Robert Gates • On North Korea’s nuclear weapon mission that’s ultimately just pissing off the rest of the world. Gates go on to say that the U.S. “will not accept North Korea as a nuclear weapons state.”  • source
