Tech: What it’s like when Steve Jobs tears his employees apart

  • You’ve tarnished Apple’s reputation … You should hate each other for having let each other down … Mossberg, our friend, is no longer writing good things about us.
  • Apple CEO Steve Jobs • Yelling at the MobileMe team in 2008, in response to criticism of the service, which had a rocky launch and even got a negative review from Apple fanboi numero uno, Walt Mossberg. He named a new executive to shepherd the MobileMe product right then and there. The revelation that Steve Jobs is kind of an asshole isn’t really a new one, but this particular story is new. Although … this kind of says a lot about Jobs that he has to note that Walt Mossberg is downright chummy with Apple. Conflict of interest? source

Tech: We knew it: Mark Zuckerberg just as awkward as the rest of us

  • You could fill a glass of water with the sweat coming off of Mark Zuckerberg’s brow in this clip, where he tries, in vain, to explain Facebook’s privacy issues. Dude’s getting grilled, and he seriously can’t take the heat. He has to take off the hoodie he never takes off. Also, how creepy is that insignia on the inside of his hoodie? In his defense, though, let’s face it – he’s 26 and he’s done more with his life than any of us can expect to do with any of ours. Let’s not knock him too much.

Tech: Steve Jobs would rather quit than let Gizmodo win

  • You know, when this whole thing with Gizmodo happened, I got advice from people who said ‘you gotta just let it slide, you shouldn’t go after a journalist just because they bought stolen property and tried to extort you.’ … I can’t do that. I’d rather quit.
  • Steve Jobs • Speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s D8 conference – very frankly in many ways. He touched on a lot of topics in the Q&A segment, noting among other things: He had no idea this e-mail thread was with a dude from ValleyWag, iPhone OS was originally designed for a tablet like the iPad, Adobe made a big stink about Flash only after the iPad’s release, and, well, this. This is the money quote from the whole thing. source

Tech: Walt Mossberg: You have to use the iPad to understand its appeal

The influential Wall Street Journal technology reviewer’s take? It’s a great new type of computing device, but with some downsides that don’t sink it. source

Tech: Walt Mossberg sez upgrading to Windows 7 a pain in the butt

  • If you use XP, it forces you to do a clean install. Mossberg, who otherwise praised the new version of Windows, noted that the OS had a requirement unlike any of its previous versions: If you’re on XP, you need to do a clean install, which will force you to lose all your programs and possibly any personal data. In fact, MS recommends that you just bite the bullet and buy a new computer with Windows 7 installed. Oh, how convenient that they’d recommend that! source

Politics, Tech: “Can social networking save journalism?,” Techcrunch asks

  • Perhaps good journalists, intuitive and ambitious journalists, might figure out how to survive this Darwinian state of media evolution on their own. Others may need the help of early risk-takers and success stories before being able to individually adapt to the socialization of content.
  • Brian Solis • In a long piece about the future of journalism – not newspapers, journalism. “Can the Statusphere Save Journalism?” was inspired in part by a conversation with Walt Mossberg. Intriguing thoughts, dude. You’re a regular Clay Shirky. • source
