Tech: But wait, that’s not all Google has to offer! Meet Google Squared.

Google Squared pulls off the mean trick of giving context to your search information. If they were selling Ginsu knives, they’d make a killing. source

Tech: It slices, it dices, it helps you find stuff! Google improves its search.

  • The new features Google seems to be gunning for the immediacy of Twitter search through its redesign, which much like every other Google redesign, is only obvious after a little digging. Javascript allows you to narrow your search criteria to something as recent as the last day, as opposed to having to dig through weeks of content to find what you want. It also sorts based on the type of content, like reviews.
  • Why the change? “So when you get your search results from Google,” says Google exec Marissa Mayer, “you need to be able to say ‘I really just want the most recent’ or ‘I really just want reviews’ – to slice and dice search results so that you can experience and visualize them in an entirely new and enriched way.” Mayer’s speaking like a supergenius right now. We wonder if she’s available (and if she’d say yes). *Fawn*
  • Our take? We’ve loved Google a lot in the past for things they do, but it always did feel like the organization end was lacking a little. To narrow down searches, it required numerous clicks or knowing the right boolean to look for something recent. They’re reacting to a trend that has seen numerous attempts to topple the company, most famously (and unsuccessfully) Cuil. (Cuil sucks, BTW.) source

Culture, Politics: Comment: Rihanna and the way the human mind works

  • A good number of people have been disappointed by us today. Why? Because they found our site on Google using the phrase “Rihanna nude.” Now, it’s bad enough that the pop star is now all over the Internet in nude poses, but considering the amount of bad buzz following the star this year, it does scream a degree of kicking someone while they’re down. But much like Paris Hilton a few years ago, a bunch of guys (and hey, maybe girls) are looking for purely exploitative kicks. Not to criticize too harshly, but aren’t there other things you could be looking for on the Internet instead? source

Biz: Amazon is really, really, really, really, really, really, really sorry

  • This problem impacted books not just in the United States but globally. It affected not just sales rank but also had the effect of removing the books from Amazon’s main product search.
  • Andrew Herdener • An Amazon spokesperson on what he calls a “ham-fisted” cataloging error which blocked a bunch of gay-themed books from the main search and pissed off Twitter. In case you didn’t see the headline, Amazon is really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, sorry. Really. • source

Tech: Protip: If you don’t want the Conficker virus, don’t search for it

  • That’s what Symantec says. Symantec, the world’s largest security firm, says that the Conficker virus (also known as Downadup) is spreading in part because those spreading the virus have stacked the deck in search engines. Many search results will automatically infect you with the virus, Symantec says. That’s lame. :( source
