Politics: Joe Miller WILL NOT CONCEDE that Lisa Murkowski beat him

  • It’s never over until the count is done. I would encourage people to recognize that 255,000 votes were cast in the US Senate race and right now what we have is about a 2000 vote difference. Less than one percent.
  • Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller • Holding on a little too closely to the belief that he still has a shot in the race. The AP called the race for Murkowski today, making her the first candidate since Strom Thurmond in 1954 to win a race on write-in ballots alone. Murkowski hasn’t declared victory today but she is expected to soon. Miller, however, whose campaign contested 8,153 ballots, is still behind by more than .5 percent, which means that if he wants a recount, he’s gonna have to pay for it himself. Look man, we understand you weren’t expecting Murkowski to win. But your cavalier attitude towards your opponents hurt you down the stretch. source

Politics: Mitch McConnell flip-flops on earmarks, making the GOP happy

  • Make no mistake, I know the good that has come from the projects I have helped support throughout my state. I don’t apologize for them. … [but] unless people like me show the American people that we’re willing to follow through on small or even symbolic things, we risk losing them on our broader efforts to cut spending and rein in government.
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell • Agreeing to support an anti-earmarks moratorium. This is a big deal because just a few days ago, he came out against it. His support shows that the GOP is willing to bend to Tea Party interests. Obama in particular supports McConnell’s decision. “I welcome Senator McConnell’s decision to join me and members of both parties who support cracking down on wasteful earmark spending, which we can’t afford during these tough economic times,” he said. In other news, Robert Byrd is rolling in his earmarked grave. source

Politics: Rep. Paul Ryan: We’re gunning for healthcare, wanna kill it by 2013

  • This bill is such a fiscal and economic train wreck for our country and for the health care system itself. We’re going to do everything we can to try and repeal and replace this thing. And ultimately, I think 2013 is when it will be done the right way.
  • Rep. Paul Ryan • Explaining the GOP’s plan for taking on health care after the midterms. First, choke the funding sources. Then, hopefully, after Obama has been kicked out of office, repeal the damn thing entirely. Look, we like Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan is a good member of Congress and has good, well-intentioned reasons for pushing what he’s pushing. Unlike someone like Mitch McConnell, we don’t think he plays politics for the sake of playing politics. Plus, he looks like he could’ve been the third Darren from “Bewitched.” But we simply think that the lead item on the GOP’s agenda should not be repealing health care. Figure out ways to work with the president and get people more jobs, then work on your beef with health care. source

Politics: Reagan budget director: GOP, Dems going too far with tax cuts

  • It’s rank demagoguery. We should call it for what it is. If these people were all put into a room on penalty of death to come up with how much they could cut, they couldn’t come up with $50 billion, when the problem is $1.3 trillion. So, to stand before the public and rub raw this anti-tax sentiment, the Republican Party, as much as it pains me to say this, should be ashamed of themselves.
  • Reagan budget director David Stockman • Ripping his own freaking party for emphasizing a tax-cut strategy despite the fact that there’s a huge deficit. “It’s become in a sense an absolute,” he explains. “Something that can’t be questioned, something that’s gospel, something that’s sort of embedded into the catechism and so scratch the average Republican today and he’ll say ‘Tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts.'” The key point he seems to be getting at: We have too much going on as a government and it can’t simply be solved by cutting taxes. It’s a point that makes him angry when the Democrats (i.e. Obama) recommend it, too. The fact of the matter is that we have the Reagan tax cuts, the Bush tax cuts and now the Obama tax cuts. Is the solution cutting the government severely, like our boys in the U.K.? Or is it just raising taxes? A lot to question. (Thanks soupsoupsource

Politics: House candidate learns you can’t dress up like a Nazi for fun

  • I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that here was a relatively small country that from a strictly military point of view accomplished incredible things. I mean, they took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view, that’s incredible.
  • Ohio Republican House candidate Rich Iott • Regarding his very unfortunate hobby as a World War II Nazi re-enactor. This is something The Atlantic’s Joshua Green noticed the other day, and since then it’s kinda blown up in the dude’s face. He may claim that he’s in it for simply military reasons, but dude’s making Godwin’s Law seriously very easy for us. We can stop listening to him immediately. Seriously. source

Politics: Dale Peterson: Officially the Ernest P. Worrell of Republican politics

  • So what if Dale Peterson didn’t win his primary for Alabama agriculture commissioner? He has a far more interesting gig. He’s taking his aw-shucks uber-Republican politics on the road to other states – this one, for the Georgia gubernatorial race, is designed in such a way that if it gets 100,000 views, it’ll get upgraded from YouTube to actually air on TV. It’s only halfway there after about a week and a half, but considering there’s a whole month until the election, he might just pull it off. Here’s another ad he did. After this, he should start selling milk.

Politics: Montana GOP: 1997 called, said homosexuality should be illegal

  • We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal.
  • The official Montana GOP stance on homosexuality • As expressed in the platform page on their Web site, under the “crime” section. It apparently was added back in 1997, before Matthew Shepard, before civil unions, before gay marriage in Massachusetts and other states, and before Prop 8. Uh, perhaps they should change that. source
