U.S.: The two sides of Detroit businessman Jim Burwell

U.S.: When not discussing health care, Obama jumped head-first into race

  • … the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home …
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing last week’s arrest of Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. during last night’s prime-time press conference. (BTW, in case you’re wondering – we’d quote the whole sentence, but the sentence was particularly massive, and this was the important part.) Obama’s stance on the Gates issue stands out because it may be the furthest he’s stuck his neck out on any one race issue since going into office. It was the moment – even beyond all of the health care gobbledygook – which will stand out from this press conference. Last week, his statement on role models also stood out for similar reasons. • source

U.S.: Obama’s election has helped thaw race relations even more

  • I’ve been working downtown for 30 years, so I’ve got a good feeling for it. Since President Obama started campaigning, if I go almost anywhere, it’s: ‘Hi! Hello, how are you, sir?’ I’m talking about strangers. Calling me ‘sir.’
  • Milwaukee resident Samuel Sallis • On the change in people’s treatment of him since Obama started running for president. Sallis isn’t alone. Nearly two-thirds of Americans think race relations are improving in this country, with double the number of blacks agreeing with that statement than previously. Despite fears that Obama’s election would build energy towards extremist anti-black sentiment (with white supremacist groups using it as a recruitment tool), the change has been largely positive so far. • source

Offbeat: This car salesman may be dead, but his obit keeps the dream alive

  • Chuck was the Director of Marketing for the Lund Cadillac Group. We are sure he would still want all to know that 0.9% financing is still available on all New 2008 Hummer H2’s.
  • An obituary for Chuck P. Dimmick, who died at a NASCAR race last week. Clever. • source
