World: Another tough, depressing day for Iran’s opposition

  • What has happened to this religious system that it orders the killing of innocent people during the holy day of Ashura?
  • Iranian reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi • Asking a pretty damn obvious question in the wake of one of the most violent and deadly days of protest since the Iranian election. It’s gotten to the point that aides to Mir Hussein Mousavi (the guy who nearly won the presidential election) and Ibrahim Yazdi (who leads the banned Iran Freedom Movement) have been arrested. Shameful. Mousavi’s own nephew, Ali Mousavi, died in the protests yesterday, creating a Neda-like flash point. source

World: The U.S. says Iranians deserve to see their “universal rights”

  • We strongly condemn the violent and unjust suppression of civilians in Iran seeking to exercise their universal rights. Hope and history are on the side of those who peacefully seek their universal rights, and so is the United States.
  • White House National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer • Condemning the latest violent response to protests in Iran today. Four people died as a result of the protests by freedom-wanting, tech-savvy Iranians. This, by the way, is the first time people have actually died during protests since the original Iran election protests in June, which makes them all the more depressing. source

  • Iranian protesters are getting savvier about using technology to tell the world about what’s going on. This video, taken at an Ashura protest in Isfahan, was uploaded via e-mail to the unity4iran Posterous page, which means that in the midst of what’s going on, the protesters need to do little to send information about what’s going on on the ground. Send an e-mail, and it’s up for the world to see. source

  • Leader loss Grand Ayatollah Ali Hossein Montazeri was one of the strongest supporters of the protest movement, and his death re-energized the protesters.
  • Wider net Montazeri’s death did not just affect students but older, middle-class Iranians, which gives the protests a broader base of support than before.
  • Important day Beyond being the seventh day after Montazeri’s death, it is also the Ashura holiday – a holy day for Shiite Muslims. Iran is a largely Shiite country. source
