U.S.: New study links medical marijuana laws to lower suicide rates

  • 11% reduction in the suicide rate of men ages 20-29
  • 9% reduction in the suicide rate of men ages 30-39 source
  • » Who would have guessed that getting high reduces stress? While the study stopped short of conclusively saying that medical marijuana was the direct cause of the lower rates, the authors did note that, when used in moderation, cannabis acts as an anti-depressant. The authors also found that states with medical marijuana programs saw a reduction in alcohol consumption by young men, and note that alcohol is a known depressant. U.S.: Obama puts the kibosh on marijuana legalization

This is part of the Obama administration’s “We The People” program: Anybody can submit a petition on a topic of their choosing, and if it gathers enough signatures, the White House will issue an official response. It’s cool that they’re actually following up on the promise to address the petitions, though we imagine proponents of medical marijuana won’t be pleased at the response.  source

  • 50% of respondents want to see marijuana legalized — the first time it’s reached a full majority
  • 46% of respondents would rather that marijuana remain illegal … a number that’s been declining for years source
  • » Will we reach a tipping point? Quite possibly, the study suggests: “If this current trend on legalizing marijuana continues, pressure may build to bring the nation’s laws into compliance with the people’s wishes,” the summary noted. Considering the current state of affairs in California, public outcry is completely understandable. Think it’ll eventually happen?

Politics: Police nail CBS reporter for growing pot in his yard

  • On the sliding career scale, 11 pot plants is really nothing. It beats suggesting that the media is run by Jews. Or being completely unable to take a joke made by Jon Stewart. But CBS Radio reporter Howard Arenstein and his wife, Orly Azoulay (a correspondent for Israel’s most popular newspaper) were arrested yesterday for having 11 pot plants growing in their yard. Arenstein, by the way, has covered some really big stories, including 9/11 and the DC sniper incident. Will a little pot do his entire career in? Good question. source

U.S.: Lame: Government pins increases in drug use on marijuana

  • Isn’t it weird how the government still plays the anti-pot line? See, in the latest version of the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health, illicit drug use among the populace is up approximately 0.7 percent in 2009, to 8.7 percent. The study says the increase “was also driven in large part by the use of marijuana.” National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske seems to be convinced that marijuana’s possible medicinal effects don’t make it medicine, but continue to make it “an entry drug.” Whatever. More numbers:
  • 21.2%of young adults screwed with illicit drugs in 2009, which is very high
  • <50%of young adults think that pot is harmful – the lowest level since 2002
  • 23.3% of all people use tobacco products, a new all-time low source

Politics: Facebook won’t let pro-pot political group promote itself with pot

  • They said they decided to reclassify it as similar to tobacco, but we said we weren’t trying to encourage people to smoke marijuana, we were supporting a change in US drug policy.
  • “Just Say Now” spokesperson Jane Hamsher • Regarding Facebook’s decision to decline a series of ads by the group that promoted a change in drug policy. (The group, by the way, has a lot of left-leaning luminaries on its board, including Salon’s Glenn Greenwald.) Why? Because they used a marijuana leaf. And they block cigarettes. Yet they don’t block alcohol. Hmm. It’s kinda like the iPhone App Store, eh? source
