World: Palestine: Al-Jazeera’s “Palestine Papers” full of lies

  • We don’t have anything to hide. [The papers have been] taken out of context and contain lies … Al-Jazeera’s information is full of distortions and fraud.
  • PLO chief negotiator Saeb Erekat • Denying the claims of al-Jazeera and The Guardian, which published the Palestine Papers, which reportedly show that Palestinians were ready to give Israel a huge concession without getting much of anything from Israel. Hamas officials, on the other hand, is quite angry about the report, saying it shows “this leadership is not honest.” FYI: More stuff is coming this week. Keep an eye out. source

World: Israeli independent study: Flotilla raid “regrettable” but legal

  • issue Back in May, an Israeli raid of a humanitarian flotilla, headed towards the until-then heavily-sanctioned Gaza, angered many who felt that Israeli military actions in the situation broke international law and led to unnecessary deaths. Israel defended its actions.
  • findings While the entire incident was “regrettable,” according to an Israeli-commissioned study, it was legal under international law – with the independent study saying soldiers “acted professionally and in a measured manner in the face of unanticipated violence.” source

World: Hotel Shepherd demolished – along with the Israeli peace process?

Thought of the day – tearing down a hotel in Jerusalem with any sort of sentimental value to Palestinians is probably a very bad idea that might hurt the ongoing peace process. source

World: The U.S. decides to let Israeli settlement deal fall through

  • That sound you hear is that of the U.S. dragging its tail between its legs. After attempting to making an offer to Israel to give them some fighter jets in exchange for a temporary delay of their building ambitions, the deal fell apart. The hope was that the delay would encourage Israel and Palestine to create firm borders, but in the end, the U.S. wouldn’t offer anything up to Israel in writing, and Palestine wouldn’t rekindle peace talks over a temporary settlement-building halt. The U.S. is playing down the diplomatic failure (which was kind of a bum deal anyway) and instead moving on to diplomatic talks between Israel and Palestine next week in the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, by the way, will be making a speech about the Middle East on Friday. source

World: U.S. bribes Israel so they’ll stop building West Bank settlements

  • $3 billion the amount the U.S. will offer Israel – mostly in the form of security incentives and fighter jets
  • 90 days the amount of time Benny Netanyahu will enforce a freeze on most new construction in the West Bank source
  • » Clarification: There is some contingency going on here. The U.S. will dangle this carrot over Israel’s head to get them to stop the settlements for now, but it could still fall through if Israel doesn’t sign a peace agreement. So it’s kind of a raw deal, but it’s not that raw.

World: Odds that Israel and the Palestinians build peace in D.C.? 1000:1

  • They have to give it the old college try once a decade, right? The Israelis and Palestinians reportedly plan to hold some peace talks in the U.S. under the Obama administration’s watchful eye in a couple of weeks. It’d be the first time the sides met for peace talks in over two years. You know what would really help Obama’s poll numbers and validate his Nobel Peace Prize at the same time? If he could create peace in the Middle East. Just sayin’. source

World: Ouch: David Cameron compares Gaza to “prison camp”

  • The situation in Gaza has to change. Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions. Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp.
  • British Prime Minister David Cameron • Using harsh language to describe the situation in the Palestine-occupied area. He also had not-nice-things to say about the flotilla attack. “I have told prime minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu we will expect the Israeli inquiry to be swift, transparent and rigorous,” he said. “Let me also be clear that the situation in Gaza has to change.” source
