U.S.: “Cape Man,” the crazy guy who wanted to kill Obama, arrested

  • Daniel James Murray was arrested … at a casino. First of all, if you’re so worried about the safety of the American economy that you threatened to kill the president, why are you at a casino? But anyway, the man, who bizarrely deposited $85,000 at a Utah bank and then withdrew it a week later while making crazy comments all the while, has been detained by the Secret Service. By the way, the New York Daily News reports that Murray likes wearing capes and talking to himself. source

U.S.: The latest Obama assassin wannabe comes from St. George, Utah

  • With all this mess going on under President Obama with banks and the economy, I’m sure if citizens happen to lose their money, they will rise up and we could see killing and deaths.
  • Daniel James Murray • According to a criminal complaint filed by Zion’s First National Bank, where he made threats to make sure he could, lacking an ID, take out part of the $25,000 he deposited. “Not to be disrespectful,” the Anton Chigurh wannabe apparently said, “but if I don’t get this money, someone is going to die.” He then made threats to the president, saying he is on a “mission to kill” Obama. He’s still out there, just an FYI. • source

U.S., World: Obama is hanging on every word the king of Saudi Arabia says

Man, we wish that people would listen to much with as much attention as Obama’s giving King Abdullah. source

Offbeat, U.S.: “Hello, President Obama’s office. How may I help you?”

Darienne M. Page is the White House Receptionist – she gets paid $36,000 a year to sit at a desk and run Obama’s life. That’s low for D.C. money, BTW. source

U.S., World: Ouch! Robert Gibbs just took a broad swipe at the U.K. press

  • If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I’m not entirely sure it’d be in the first pack of clips I’d pick up. You’re not going to find very many of these newspapers and truth within 25 words of each other.
  • Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs • On British press reports that the blocked Abu Ghraib photos showed graphic scenes of torture and rape. Not to be critical or anything, but the British press – in fact, the very paper you’re criticizing, The Daily Telegraph – did just take down a sitting House of Commons speaker. You should probably give them some credit, Robert. • source

Politics, U.S.: Republicans criticize Obama for going out on a date

  • As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills.
  • RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho • On the president’s choice to take a night off from his job and go out on a date with his wife Michelle in New York City. We think her argument that Obama’s taking the night off from one of the hardest white-collar jobs you’ll find is overblown (especially since Bush set a high mark for vacation days), but her side argument that Obama shouldn’t be spending taxpayer money on this is spot-on. Obama is taking the smaller plane, but it still costs lots of money to run it. • source

U.S., World: Obama’s decision to block the Abu Ghraib photos was smart

  • The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it.
  • Major General Antonio Taguba • Regarding the photos Obama chose not to release, which show scenes of “torture, abuse, rape and every indecency,” according to the general. We think the world is probably better off without them, kids. • source

Politics, U.S.: Ah Rush, saying such soothing words about Sonia Sotomayor

  • Do I want her to fail? Yeah. Do I want her to fail to get on the court? Yes. She’d be a disaster on the court. Do I still want to Obama to fail as president? Yeah. … He’s going to fail anyway, but the sooner the better here so that as little damage can be done to the country.
  • Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh • Stuck between a rock and a hard place in criticism of Obama’s supreme court justice pick Sonia Sotomayor, who he called a “reverse racist.” The challenge that the GOP faces is that Hispanics make up a good portion of their base currently, and if they’re not careful, they could alienate them with their attacks. But Rush doesn’t care. Rush is Rush. • source

U.S.: Why you’ll like Sonia Sotomayor: She’s one of us.

  • I am an ordinary person who has been blessed with extraordinary opportunities and experiences.
  • Obama’s Supreme Court justice pick Sonia Sotomayor • On what she describes as “the most humbling honor of my life.” The biggest hurdle she’ll likely face to becoming a justice is that she hasn’t had to make any major decisions on abortion cases, BTW. • source

Politics, U.S.: YAY POLITICS! Obama announces his SCOTUS pick today

  • That sound you hear is of D.C. politicians freaking izzout. It’s been hyped bigger than any summer blockbuster, and Obama’s ready to talk. He plans to announce it at 10:15 a.m., according to MSNBC. We hope it lives up to the hype. MSNBC says it’ll likely be Sonia Sotomayor, making for the court’s first Hispanic justice. Stay tuned for more blockbuster District of Columbia action! source
