Politics: Obama not rocking the vote for congressional candidates

  • 2.5M the number of young voters Rock the Vote was able to register during the Obama-fied 2008 elections
  • 280k the number of voters they were able to register this time around (that’s kind of a big decline, guys)
  • 44% Obama’s current approval rating among college students – good luck getting out the vote with that, guys source

Politics: Is Obama avoiding temple visit so he doesn’t look like a Muslim?

  • problem Obama is facing a lot of criticism suggesting that he’s Muslim, even though he’s not by a long shot. One in five Americans think he is, though.
  • crisis He canceled a trip to a city in India, possibly because he’d visit a temple that requires mandatory headgear – a.k.a. ammo for hatahz.
  • but … Some people in the city of Amritsar say he’d be OK to visit the Sikh Golden Temple wearing just a baseball cap. Go Yankees! source

Politics: Obama’s record on gay rights pretty crappy so far, in our book

  • Obama, Obama, Obama … sigh. Look, we know you have the military in your ear. We know that the elections are coming up. We know that your party is probably going to lose a lot of seats come November. But the way you’ve handled this “don’t ask, don’t tell” mess – and gay rights in general – is pretty sad. It’s like you’re paying lip service to the idea of expanding gay rights while heading the opposite direction when the opportunity arises. Your administration’s quick appeal of a lower court’s decision repealing DADT was like dumping water all over many of your supporters. Sure, you can go on about them being unable to see the forest for the trees, but you don’t even seem to be interested in the forest at this point. And don’t even get us started on the fact that you don’t support gay marriagesource

U.S.: Wrongful detainment suit against John Ashcroft goes to Supreme Court

  • Is John Ashcroft in trouble? It appears that the Obama Administration will have to go to bat in the Supreme Court for the controversial former attorney general, who’s facing a suit from a former college football player detained without cause for 16 days. He was held under what some critics call a radical reinterpretation of the “material witness” law. Abdullah al-Kidd, who once was a running back at the University of Idaho, claimed he was held naked at times and shackled at other times. Now al-Kidd wants to personally sue Ashcroft. If the Supreme Court favors al-Kidd, who’s already won a in a lower court, let the lawsuits begin. (Photo by Gage Skidmore) source

Politics: Max Headroom: New Jersey governor Chris Christie likes cutting stuff

  • Repudiate this The thing about this clip that’s entertaining is not the subject matter, which involves Eric Cantor denouncing a candidate for Congress with an unfortunate interest in Naziism. It’s entertaining because Cantor used “repudiate” correctly. Take notes, Sarah.
  • Pissed-off in Philly Obama spent his sunday in Philadelphia stumping, specifically for Joe Sestak, that guy who knocked Arlen Specter out of the Senate. During his speech, Obama made a blatant rip on the GOP’s fiscal policies, clearly blaming them for the economic crisis.
  • Explaining Chris ChristieIn case you’re wondering why the New Jersey governor decided to cancel a huge public works project (which, after much complaining, he’s reconsidering), this anecdote explains it. This guy is fiscal conservatism to the core, and he’s not afraid to use his clout.

Politics: James L. Jones: Total Obama administration outsider?

  • It took me a while to get the president to call me by my first name.
  • Obama’s former National Security Adviser, James L. Jones • In the middle of Obama’s first year on the job. Jones’ stay in that position was a tad, shall we say, rocky. Word on the street is that he never felt comfortable in the job, and was an outsider in an administration full of insiders. This feeling was reportedly cemented by Bob Woodward’s new book, “Obama’s Wars,” which reportedly has the former general calling Obama’s right-hand men “water bugs,” the “Politburo,” and the “Mafia.” The book apparently angered him so much that he mailed it directly back to Woodward. So yeah, not good terms. source

U.S.: Revolving door: National Security Adviser James L. Jones heads out

  • Another one bites the dust! Obama’s National Security Adviser is only the latest in a long line of folks to exit the revolving door of the Obama administration as midterms heat up. He’ll be remembered for this post, along with this photo. His replacement? Thomas E. Donilon. source

Politics: Parallels: Obama’s careening to midterms just like Ronald Reagan

  • reaganHaving inherited a recession and sporting a 10.4 percent jobless rate, the GOP managed to only lose 24 seats in the House and hold a 54-seat majority in the Senate during the 1982 midterms.
  • obama Under similar circumstances – and a much lower jobless rate – many analysts are predicting that Dems will lose the House and may lose the Senate come November. How about that for parallels? source

U.S.: Obama stops the foreclosure smorgasbord from becoming worse

  • what Obama said he would veto the Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act, a minor bill  which passed both houses with little debate.
  • whyThe timing is suspect – as a side effect, the bill could allow mortgage lenders to rush through foreclosures more quickly from outside states. source
  • » Why this is a big deal: In recent weeks, politicians (especially Democrats) have been attacking mortgage lenders for using aggressive, shady techniques to push through foreclosures – a process which was impeded after the companies’ documentation came under question. A leading mortgage firm, Ally (better known as GMAC) recently had to halt all evictions in 23 states as a result of these documentation problems – revealed by one of their own employees in sworn testimony. The big story there, though, is that the smorgasbord of eviction is still on in 27 other states.
