Politics: Reaction from the Right – and Left – to Health Care vitriolic

  • This morning, as millions of Americans prepared to gather with their families in celebration of Christmas, President Obama and Harry Reid gathered with their liberal allies in celebration of government.
  • RNC Chairman Michael Steele • Regarding the health care plan’s passage. Man, Mikey, you’re a regular Mitch McConnell, aren’t you? On the other side of the spectrum, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said he preferred the House bill, mainly because, well, they didn’t need to gut everything to get it passed. He made this quip, though: “Not since the passage of Medicare 44 years ago have we seen Republican scare tactics so blatantly contrary to the interests of the American people.” source

Politics, U.S.: Michael Steele speaks like he’s grown a backbone. Has he?

  • If we have the courage of our convictions, and we do, then we will and we must stand up against disastrous policies, regardless of the president’s popularity.
  • GOP head Michael Steele • Who is trying to make a return to the public eye after looking like a freaking idiot ever since he was elected GOP chair. In his speech, he said that the party needs to sharply attack Obama’s policies head-on, rather than pussyfoot around them. Did he succeed at making a return to the public eye? Twitter largely sez no, and that he sucks at public speaking to boot. • source

U.S.: Fun fact about RNC chair Michael Steele: He cowers quickly.

  • Two days ago: The day Rush Limbaugh gave a killer CPAC speech, the RNC chairman said something pretty harsh about the man of the moment: “Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh — his whole thing is entertainment. He has this incendiary — yes, it’s ugly.” He said this on, of all places, D.L. Hughley’s new CNN show. source

  • Today: Man, he backed down like France in a World War. Today, in a phone interview, Steele was much less blunt about his words: “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.” Dude, you run a freaking political party and need to look strong. Need a hug? We give free hugs here. source

U.S.: Who won the RNC chairman job? Nobody.

  • There was no majority victor. The guy who got the closest was former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, who got 51 votes, but you need 85 to lead the Republican Party. The guy who’s currently the chair, Mike Duncan, only got 44, and as Bush’s handpicked choice during an era where George W. Bush was incredibly unpopular, he might have the stink on him which prevents him from keeping his job. They’ve already gone through three rounds of balloting. Maybe the fourth time’s the charm. source

U.S.: New RNC chair sought. Must make us look good in front of Obama.

  • In disarray right now After a pretty hefty loss in November, led by Barack Obama and some pretty significant Democratic coattails, that whole “Republican Revolution” thing from the 1990s is a long-forgotten memory. So today, the party chooses new leadership to get them back on track. source

  • In contention Mike Duncan, the current leader, could get re-elected, but he has a lot of competition. That competition includes former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, ex-Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson and Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis. source

  • Chip’s an idiot Ex-Tennessee GOP Chairman Chip Saltsman was also on that list, but he dropped out on Thursday. Admittedly, he was a longshot: He lost a lot of support after he sent a holiday CD out to Republican leadership that included a comedy song called “Barack the Magic Negro.” *forehead slap* source
