World: Afghanistan protests: NATO recalls personnel at Kabul-based ministries

Police March Towards Protesters In Kabul

  • After five days of intense protesting across Afghanistan, NATO has recalled all personnel working in its Kabul ministries. The move comes on the heels of reports that two U.S. officials — allegedly one colonel and one major — were shot and killed at the Afghan Interior Ministry building this morning. A NATO spokeswoman would not confirm the rankings of the two servicemen, but did confirm that they were killed by someone who turned a weapon on them. She declined to comment when asked if the killer was a member of the Afghan military or police force. In an emailed statement to the press, the Afghan Taliban claimed credit for the killings, saying they were in retaliation for the burning of Korans at Bagram Air Base earlier this week. U.S.: Koran-burning Terry Jones linked to Afghanistan killings

  • Thoughts on placing blame: Eleven people, among them U.N. officials, were killed in the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif today. ABC News reports the killings occurred after a crowd of people protesting Pastor Terry Jones were informed of his completed Koran burnings. To be clear, what Terry Jones did in burning the Koran was at best a crass publicity stunt and at worse bigoted antagonism, and before he did it U.S. military figures warned of possible violent outcomes. He bears a responsibility for his actions, actions which in the strictest literal sense seem to have caused horrific destruction. It should be said, though, that burning a book in almost any definition of civil society can’t be grounds for murder, no matter your affinity for the words printed inside. Keeping this in perspective is important in an honest, nuanced debate on these issues. source

U.S., World: Pastor Terry Jones bringing his Islamophobia across the pond?

  • infamy Terry Jones, the pastor who wanted to burn the Koran on 9/11 only to not do it because he thought he had brokered a deal with the “Ground Zero Mosque” folks in NYC (spoiler: he didn’t), is pretty much a laughingstock these days.
  • fandom Fortunately, Jones still has some supporters – in the U.K. He’ll be going to speak at a rally held by the English Defense League (which has nothing to do with soccer, BTW) in February. They’re pretty darn anti-Islamic, too, so he’ll fit right in. source

Politics: Terry Jones threatened to burn the Koran. His prize? A free car.

  • dumb Anti-Muslim Florida pastor Terry Jones sparked an annoying national controversy after threatening to burn the Koran on 9/11.
  • smart A New Jersey car dealership offered Jones a new car if Jones didn’t burn the Koran. Jones didn’t do it, but not for that reason.
  • dumb Weeks after the incident, Jones’ church called the car dealership to see if the deal was still valid. It was. And now Jones is getting a free car. source
  • » So, what did he get? Jones got a 2011 Hyundai Accent, valued at $13,600. Which in some ways makes us sick to our stomachs. This guy created one of the craziest trumped-up controversies of the past year, and he stands to benefit financially. Disgusting.
