Offbeat: Bad news: Kobayashi can’t beat Guinness pizza-eating record

  • Is the mighty one falling?: A few months after Kobayashi created a depressing scene at Nathan’s Fourth of July hot-dog-eating contest – a contest he routinely owned for years – competitive eating’s greatest, uh, “athlete” had another embarrassing incident last night, after he failed at a pizza-eating record attempt in New York City. In his defense, the Guinness rules he was working against were kinda strict (pizza is made to be eaten with hands in most cases, not knife and fork), but the result left a champion looking a little like a loser. Poor guy. source

Offbeat: Hot Dog Eating Contest: Meet the jerks who wouldn’t let Kobayashi eat

These dudes run Major League Eating, which popularized the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and is now forcing exclusive contracts on its eaters. Lame. source

Offbeat: Can we just say that Kobayashi’s arrest is the weirdest thing EVER?

  • He wanted to compete in the hot-dog eating contest. But he wouldn’t sign an exclusive contract with the dudes who run it (“Major League Eating” – we’re not kidding, that’s what they’re called), so when he ran onto the stage after the event, he was arrested. This is the hot-dog-eating equivalent of running onto the field during a football game in the midst of a contract hold-out. And you know what? It’s going to reflect really badly on the corporatized nature of what was once a goofy, fun event. (By the way, Joey Chestnut won for a fourth year in a row. But he only ate 54 hot dogs – far short of his own record.) source
