U.S.: True justice: Corrupt juvenile court judge sentenced for kickback scheme

  • unjustified A Pennsylvania juvenile court judge who happened to have a couple of friends at some youth detention centers sentenced kids to these centers (even for minor offenses!), then received over $1 million in kickbacks from the camps.
  • justified Now former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. will have a long time to think about how much he probably screwed up those kids, after he received a harsh sentence of his own — 28 years in the clink. Oh, sweet justice. source

U.S.: Blago beat: The dude apparently liked kickbacks or something

  • The prosecution in his corruption trial says so. What’s their case? Well, according to a court document released today, they argue that Rod Blagojevich and his staff had been involved in extortion and kickbacks since Blago first got elected Illinois governor in 2002. The Obama seat thang (Roland Burris has sure been quiet lately, eh?) was just the most blatant example. Blago (of course) denies the claims, calling them “the same old false allegations and lies.” His lawyers had been fighting the document’s release. source

U.S.: Juvenile court? More like kickback kourt

  • The case in question Former Luzerne County President Judge Mark Ciavarella presided over many juvenile cases – 5,000 in the last five years – and was strangely harsh with sentencing. In one example, he sentenced a kid to nine months at a juvenile detention center for stealing change out of unlocked cars.
  • Now that’s just sketchy Ciavarella had a pretty corrupt reason for the harsh sentencing – he and another judge sent more kids to juvenile detention facilities so that they could get kickbacks to the tune of $2.6 million. The two judges recently got sentenced to 87 months in prson for fraud. See, that’s what they deserve.
  • Many lives ruinedCiavarella left a long trail of damage – of the children who faced him in court without counsel, 50% of them went to a juvenile detention center. “I was sort of shocked and taken aback,” she Hillary Transue, one of his victims. “I didn’t really understand what was going on.” source
