Considering what’s on the line for him (a heck of a lot more than a sex warrant), it’s nothing short of impressive that he gave himself up to police. Wikileaks emphasizes, by the way, that Assange’s arrest won’t affect the release of more cables – including tonight’s release. source

  • yeah … Julian Assange, currently in the U.K., agreed to meet with British police about his legal situation in Sweden, which wants to extradite him. He has not been arrested and his people are the moment cooperating with the authorities.
  • … but Our boy’s lawyers have been fighting tooth-and-nail for him, trying to get him as sweetheart a deal as they possibly can. It might be hard with rape charges, though. (His lawyers deny that Sweden has actually charged him.) source

  • Newt calls Julian Assange an “enemy combatant”: Talk about harsh words, but Newt Gingrich’s take on how bad Julian Assange is for the country is perhaps a weeee bit over the top. No matter, he just keeps on talking anyway, calling Obama’s approach to handling national security matters “amateurish.” Maybe we’re crazy here, but we have to imagine that the Obama administration didn’t singlehandedly build all of these security mechanisms that broke down. Rather, the work of MANY presidential administrations nosedived.
  • Like “groundhog Day”On “Meet the Press” today, Mitch McConnell claimed that he’s been talking to the Obama administration more in the last two weeks than he has in the last two months. However, he claimed (bizarrely) that Saturday’s vote on the tax cuts was like “Groundhog Day” – the same thing over and over again. That’s a good look for you, Mr. Kettle; reminds us of Mr. Pot.
  • Did he say “more immigrants”?The New York Times’ Thomas “Tommy Boy” Friedman was also on “Meet the Press” today talking (in that big-idea mode of his) about globalization and immigration. During the chat, he suggested that (in a talk about ways to boost the American worker’s value) the U.S. bring in “more immigrants” – which we’re still trying to wrap our heads around.

World: Wikileaks has a “poison pill” ready if the site goes down

  • danger Wikileaks is reportedly under constant attack from all sides (from Amazon to Paypal to Congress to Distributed Denials of Service to INTERPOL), and Assange is worried he might be arrested soon. The odds are good, actually.
  • retaliation If that does happen, though, Wikileaks has an encrypted document called the “insurance” file – reportedly loaded with uncensored state documents. The password will get released if Wikileaks goes down. source

  • problem Julian Assange needs to find somewhere to go, stat, because he’s wanted by INTERPOL (RED ALERT!) for sex crimes in Sweden.
  • solution? The Deputy Foreign Minister of Ecuador offered to have Assange stay in his country as a safe haven “without any conditions.” Yeah!

Biz: Julian Assange dropped a HUGE hint a freaking year ago

  • At the moment, for example, we are sitting on 5GB from Bank of America, one of the executive’s hard drive. Now how do we present that? It’s a difficult problem. … To have impact, it needs to be easy for people to dive in and search it and get something out of it.
  • Wikileaks’ Julian Assange • Explaining how they leak material to the press, but dropping the fact that they have a bunch of stuff from Bank of America ready to leak. This was completely ignored by the press (and even we didn’t make much of it when we posted about it a few months back). But then our boy Julian talked to Forbes, people put two and two together, and all of a sudden Bank of America’s stock went down today. The difference? Assange wasn’t seen as a threat when he made this interview a year ago. Now … he’s a threat. source

World: Wikileaks plans document release WAY BIGGER than Iraq War Logs

  • For some perspective here, it’s good to note that the Iraq War Logs is widely considered the largest war document release in history, so if this is seven times bigger … holy crap. This could perhaps be epic. Meanwhile, Julian Assange has a warrant out for his arrest, so this has lots of room to get much messier than it already is. source
