Politics: Senators running for the hills, not re-election

  • 8 U.S. Senators will retire in 2012 rather than seek re-election source
  • » What’s going on? Well, it’s a mix of this and that. A few of the retirees clearly weren’t going to win re-election, namely John Ensign and “Cowboy Joe” Lieberman. A few could have won but faced uphill battles (Jim Webb, Kent Conrad). Hawaii’s Daniel Akaka is just really old, and Kay Bailey Hutchison had promised that she’d retire if she lost her bid for Texas Governor (which she did). But some of the retirements — Jeff Bingaman and John Kyl in particular — seemingly came out of nowhere. We’ll just have to take ’em at their word when they say what politicians always say when they retire: they want to spend more time with their families.

U.S.: VA Senate: Terry McAuliffe might run to replace Webb

  • Fresh off Jim Webb’s retirement announcement, Clinton super-fundraiser, former DNC chair and failed gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s name has surfaced as a possible replacement. Asked about it, he said that he “can’t rule it out.” If he does run, expect to see Slick Willy making tons of appearances on his behalf: the two have been close for the better part of two decades, and Clinton is nothing if not loyal. source

U.S.: Jim Webb won’t seek re-election; Virginia Democrats start worrying

  • NO Sen. Jim Webb won’t run for re-election in 2012 source
  • » Why this matters: Webb, a Demcorat, snatched George “Macaca” Allen’s Virginia Senate seat in 2006 by a razor-thin margin. Now, Allen’s running to get his old job back, and had perhaps hoped for a rematch with his past foe. But it ain’t gonna happen, according to a statement released by Webb. Thing is, Democrats don’t have too many other promising Senate prospects in Virginia; their next best bet would probably be DNC chair and former Governor Tim Kaine. But Kaine doesn’t seem to keen on a Senate run, so Democrats may need to either find another viable candidate, or lose Virginia and greet Macaca back into the Senate. Fun fact: Prior to becoming a Senator, Webb helped write the hit 2000 film “Rules of Engagement;” a clue to his future plans, perhaps?

U.S.: George Allen back in the Virginia electoral saddle

  • then George Allen, Virginia’s Republican Senator in 2006, was thought to have ended his career after publicly calling a Jim Webb aide of Indian descent “macaca,” a racial slur.
  • now Five years after his “macaca” foul-up, Allen has announced he’ll be jumping into the Virginia Senate race in 2012, hoping that gaffe won’t hurt anymore. source

U.S., World: Activists: Will Jim Webb’s visit to Myanmar actually bear fruit?

  • It’s too premature to say this is very positive. … It could break the ice.
  • Nyo Ohn Myint • A former aide of Aung San Suu Kyi, on whether Sen. Jim Webb’s meeting with the human rights activist will be of any use to Myanmar’s political climate, as well as personal tensions between Suu Kyi and Senior General Than Shwe. Webb, who supports easing sanctions on the country (also known as Burma), was the first major U.S. politician to meet Than Shwe. Activists say this could be a face-saving situation where the country doesn’t actually give anything up. Either way, at least he got John Yettaw home. • source

U.S., World: Aung San Suu Kyi’s stupid visitor, John Yettaw, is getting released

  • Credit Sen. Jim Webb for the diplomatic work. John Yettaw, the out-of-shape American who swam across a moat to save Burmese human rights leader Aung San Suu Kyi but just made things worse, will be getting out of seven years of hard labor. It’s thanks to Webb, a Virginia senator who comes off as a miniature Bill Clinton in this context. While Yettaw gets out, there’s no word on Suu Kyi, who was sentenced by Myanmar to more house arrest in a decision that angered many. source
