U.S.: Carmageddon officials weirded out by bizarre requests

  • In planning for this closure, we gathered the best emergency around. We tried to think of everything but some of these requests are beyond even what we had anticipated.

Andy Smith • Expressing bewilderment at some of the ideas thrown in the general direction of officials planning for this weekend’s “Carmageddon” in Southern California —including a block party on the Santa Monica Boulevard ramp leading to Interstate 405, a group of bicyclists who want to ride down a steep incline, and some marketing dudes who wanted to use graffiti to promote the new “Planet of the Apes” movie. All of these incredibly awesome ideas were nixed due to safety concerns. Bummer. Fly jetBlue instead, dudes. source

Biz: Looking for a way to avoid the traffic snarl on LA’s 405?

  • » This is a pretty genius marketing move, not the least of all because it provides some potential relief from what Los Angeles authorities clearly fear could be a gridlock of epic proportions this weekend — no local government idly urges its citizens not to go places on their freeways, as it’s bad for the economy for people not to be out and about. The $4 flights are the shortest distance tickets jetBlue has ever sold, and they’ll take about 20 minutes.

Offbeat: Disgruntled flight attendant’s mom: It was a “very small meltdown”

  • I don’t think he’s going to be in trouble very long. I think he just had a very small meltdown, and I think he deserves to be able to have that meltdown if you saw the egg on his head where he got smacked.
  • Diane Slater • Discussing her son’s memorable meltdown. Flight attendant Steven Slater’s quitting – getting into a fight with a passenger, grabbing a couple of beers, and escaping through the plane’s inflatable chute – was perhaps the most bizarrely random thing to ever happen on an airplane, ever. It’s good to know that his mom has his back on this, but she may understand it better than most – she’s a retired flight attendant. source

Offbeat: Flight attendant with hurt feelings makes entertaining scene

Steven Slater got hit in the head with luggage. The passenger wouldn’t apologize, so he started talking crap on the PA. Then he fled down the emergency slide with two beers. source
