U.S.: Obama: The (combat end of the) Iraq war is officially over and stuff

  • Mission accomplished? Obama’s presidential address tonight marked the end of a long war (as far as combat operations go), and the next step will be to move forward and deal with more pressing concerns – Afghanistan and the economy. Now, there were certain things that might cause great disagreement – the somewhat firm emphasis that we’ll be getting out entirely next year is kind of a biggie – but ultimately, average people aren’t in this mode anymore. They want to see a stronger economy, not a never-ending, ultra-contentious war. source

U.S., World: Obama’s ready to end major combat operations in Iraq

  • He plans to announce it in about a hour. Ready to see one of our wars go away? Well, get ready. Obama plans to announce that he plans to wind down major combat operations in Iraq. Instead, the U.S. will still take an advisory role. It’s not without risk, however – see, Iraq doesn’t have a stable government right now – but he still plans to make the announcement to a bunch of veterans today. He will not, however, declare “Mission Accomplished.” Probably a smart political move on his part, guys. source

Politics: “The War is Making You Poor Act”; Alan Grayson good with names

  • Let’s face it; this bill has about as much a chance of passing as anything Dennis Kucinich has submitted in the last fifteen years, but it’s pretty brilliant in its conceit; take the extra money for the Iran and Afghan wars and give most of it it to the taxpayers, and use the rest to pay off the federal deficit and federal debt. It’s kind of a dream bill for the far left, especially given its name. However, much like everything Grayson has done in the last year and a half, it’s an attention grab. Well, it worked. Kucinich wishes he had this kind of attention. source

U.S., World: Iraq coverup: Wikileaks scores a major free-information win

  • Wikileaks went through a lot of hell to get this video up. The clip, which shows a Reuters photographer and another staffer (along with ten others) getting killed by the U.S. government during the Iraq war because they mistook his camera for a weapon. He was shot at from a distance, and he survived, only to be killed during a rescue attempt. The government has been covering up this clip for years, including from Reuters. Now, from this video, it’s clear what happened: An unprovoked attack. This video is a harrowing watch. source

U.S.: John Murtha: A friend of the military, not a friend of the Iraq War

  • Every person who serves in the military has lost an advocate and a good friend.
  • Wisconsin Rep. David Obey • On the death of Rep. John Murtha. Murtha, one of Congress’ most-hard-nosed members, had served Pennsylvania’s 12th district since 1974. He was best-known for his stance on military issues, mainly because he had been there – he was the first Vietnam veteran to serve in Congress. Notably, Murtha was an early critic of the Iraq War, at a time when the war was still popular with the American public. He also had some notable weaknesses, such as being notorious for pushing pork into his own district. Even so, his death was unexpected – doctors accidentally hit his intestine during routine gall bladder surgery, which means a malpractice lawsuit is possibly in the doctors’ future. source
