World: The current state of Tehran: Unease between military, protesters

  • After a long Saturday, things have (temporarily) quieted. On Saturday, we learned two things about the nature of the Iran protests: One, the government is no longer willing to accept peaceful dissent; and two, protesters are willing to risk their lives in the fight for the rights of the country’s people. Today, things have calmed down, but are expected to heat up again later in the day. Even if the protests calmed down after today, deep political wounds are now out in the open – something the Iranian government will struggle with easing. source

World: Great Britain takes punch after punch from Iran’s leadership

  • Great Britain has plotted against the presidential election for more than two years. We witnessed an influx of people before the election. Elements linked to the British secret service were flying in in droves.
  • Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Manouchehr Mottaki • Regarding the real reason why Iran’s government is currently facing massive protests – because the U.K. planned the fallout. Uh, sure. British MP David Milliband, the U.K.’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, wouldn’t take the bait: “I reject categorically the idea that the protesters in Iran are manipulated or motivated by foreign countries.” • source

Politics, World: Analyst: Iran’s government is making a big mistake

  • Now they’ll have to hold their ground and hope that people don’t keep coming back. But history has taught us that people in these situations lose their initial sense of fear and become emboldened by brutality.
  • Mehrdad Khonsari • A consultant for the Center for Arab and Iranian Studies, based in London. Khonsari says that he feels the regime is taking an “enormous risk” by handling things this way. It could make things worse for them in the long run. • source

World: Iranian icon Ruhollah Khomeini’s shrine hit by suicide bomber

  • Two people were wounded in the bombing. The suicide bomber killed himself at the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 Iranian Revolution and was the iconic face of Islam to the Western world in the 1980s. Khomeini, Iran’s Supreme Leader before his son Ali took over after his 1989 death, was a popular leader during his life, but could be seen as a point of contention in the wake of the massive protests. source

Politics, World: Iran presidential candidate Mehdi Karoubi: Cancel the vote

  • Accept the Iranian nation’s will by canceling the vote and guarantee the establishment’s survival.
  • Mehdi Karoubi • An Iranian presidential candidate who was the only cleric to run. He, along with high-attention opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi and other guy Mohsen Rezaie, will meet with the Guardian Council tomorrow to consider complaints. Keep in mind, though, that they’ll be talking to this guy. And this guy is transparently in favor of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So, this will be a tough day for these three dudes. • source

World: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran plays his Supreme Leader card

  • I will not give in to illegal demands. If we break the law, we will have to do it in every election and no election would be immune. This is wrong. This is the beginning of dictatorship.
  • Ayatollah Ali Khamenei • Who called on the protesters – you know, a million strong yesterday – to call off peaceful protests supporting Mir Hossein Mousavi or face the consequences. Who does this jerk think he is? Note the twisted language in this message. By the way, he also trashed on the Western media again. • source
