Politics: Democrats go down! Three races where incumbents fell flat

  • Perriello Tom Perriello was able to get Obama to rally for him last weekend, but he lost anyway. Guess that isn’t worth much.
  • Grayson Alan Grayson, the controversial hard-left “die quickly” congressman, won’t be returning for a second term.
  • Boucher Longtime Rep. Rick Boucher‘s vote on cap-and-trade seems to have done him in. He lost in his Virginia race.

Politics: Barney Frank all uncomfortable ’cause his House race is close

  • 49% the share for the “left-handed gay Jew” in his House race in Mass.
  • 37% the share hard-campaigning Iraq vet Sean Bielat has – it’s the closest anyone’s polled to Frank in years
  • 12% could prove spoilers for our personal favorite member of Congress source

Politics: House candidate learns you can’t dress up like a Nazi for fun

  • I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that here was a relatively small country that from a strictly military point of view accomplished incredible things. I mean, they took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view, that’s incredible.
  • Ohio Republican House candidate Rich Iott • Regarding his very unfortunate hobby as a World War II Nazi re-enactor. This is something The Atlantic’s Joshua Green noticed the other day, and since then it’s kinda blown up in the dude’s face. He may claim that he’s in it for simply military reasons, but dude’s making Godwin’s Law seriously very easy for us. We can stop listening to him immediately. Seriously. source

Politics: Colbert’s House subcommittee hearing statements “not insulting”

  • It’s not quite clear which way it’s going to come out, but it’s not going to be the same bombastic style you see on TV because there’s a certain decorum, and he’s aware of it. It will be funny, but not insulting.
  • An aide familiar with Stephen Colbert’s testimony • Describing what he’s expected to say in a House subcommittee hearing about immigration. Colbert will be appearing with United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez, whose “Take Our Jobs” campaign encourages people to do the same work as migrant farmers. Only a handful of people have tried so far, one of them being Colbert. source

U.S.: Ethics charges: So, what is Charles Rangel facing, anyway?

  • The charges are unspecified. The allegations, though … This sounds pretty bad for Charlie. According to the Sunlight Foundation, the longtime New York congressman reportedly omitted between $239,026 and $831,000 from his financial disclosures (assets either purchased, sold or held), and also reportedly had some shady dealings with AIG. He’s had a rough couple of years, and stepped down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee back in March. Poor Charlie. source

Biz: Financial reform bill: Debit card fee hataz have a reason to be happy

  • Remember the financial bill? Oh yeah, that thing. One of the many feathers in Obama’s cap. Well, the bill, which has already passed the Senate, needed some changes to pass muster with the house. The biggest one for consumers and small businesses? The insanely high fees on debit card transactions, which were responsible for big profits for card companies at the cost of small businesses. Well – great news! – after a little work, the House finally struck a tentative deal on this issue. There are lots of other things to still hash out, though, including the biggie for investors (and people who don’t want to see their financial system fall apart) – regulating derivatives. source
