U.S.: Acid attack hoax: Joaquin Phoenix not the only one coming clean

  • It has had an impact on our community. It has brought negative attention on our community that is undeserved.
  • Vancouver, Washington Police Chief Clifford Cook • Regarding the acid attack that his police department spent hundreds of manhours on, only to find out that the attack was self-inflicted. Bethany Storro, 28, spent days in the hospital because of the caustic liquid thrown in her face (which fortunately didn’t hit her eyes because she had just bought new sunglasses). She claimed the attack took place at a Starbucks, but over time discrepancies started to show in her story. No word on if she’ll be charged. source

Politics: BP “hoaxers”: Holocaust deniers, 9/11 “truthers” have company

  • For the love of God, you idiots! We landed on the moon, Obama’s birth certificate is real, the World Trade Center actually got hit by a couple of planes, the Holocaust actually happened, JFK got shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, and there is a ton of BP’s black stuff in the Gulf of Mexico right now. Can we discredit these idiots immediately, please? source

Offbeat: Dude gets on morning news show with fake yo-yo skillz

  • If you’ve ever seen the film “The Foot Fist Way,” in which Danny McBride stars as a kung fu master, just imagine kind of the same incredibly awkward thing, except with yo-yos. This guy clearly isn’t an expert at anything, especially not yo-yos. source

Culture: YES! It’s time for the Richard Heene Larry King interview!

  • He claims he pleaded guilty so his wife wasn’t deported. Oh Larry, we knew you wouldn’t let us down! In an interview to run on CNN Friday, the Balloon Boy’s father, Richard Heene, explains that he isn’t guilty but in fact was trying to protect his wife. Because he’s a douchebag. “Quite honestly,” said Larimer County, Colorado, Sheriff Jim Alderden, “I’m shocked that he would make such statements.” So are we. But he’s a reality TV wannabe. This is how he survives. source

Culture: It’s official; the Balloon Boy parents plead guilty

  • No word on if they’ll be sentenced to a tomato-thowing at the town square. Richard and Mayumi Heene made things easy on the American public by pleading guilty today – Richard on a felony charge and Mayumi on a misdemeanor. Hopefully the court can legally prevent them from profiting off their non-story so we can ignore them for once and for all. source

Culture: Lifetime stays classy, pulls the Balloon Boy “Wife Swap” episode

  • A while ago, Lifetime scheduled an episode of “Wife Swap,” featuring a wacky storm-chasing family, to air on Thursday. source
  • Since then, the Heene family has been on TV around the clock after perpetrating the “Balloon Boy” hoax last week. source
  • Rather than give them even more time on TV, Lifetime pulled the episode. Good job. This family needs no more press. source

U.S.: A former co-worker of balloon dad says the story is full of hot air

  • I just thought he was beginning to push them into some things that were ethically on the edge. … I knew at some point he would create a situation that would bring attention like he’s having right now. I didn’t want to be a part of that.
  • Scott Stevens • A former colleague of “baloon dad” Richard Henne who had a falling out with the storm-chaser over how much he was getting his kids into. Many are strongly convinced that this is a hoax, but Richard Henne stands by his claim that it wasn’t. “We were holding on to every second, hoping that he’s OK,” he said. “I’m not selling anything. This is what we do all the time. I don’t have a can of beans I’m trying to promote.”  • source

Offbeat: The most believable congregation in history doesn’t congregate

  • The Calvary Nudist Baptist Church isn’t real. Mark Johnson, how could you lie to us! Your referencing of biblical passages to promote the idea of free-flowing nudity in church services was funny, and we believed it was real (in the way that one believes the tooth fairy is real). So, Tyler, Texas, your claim to fame remains … being known as the “Rose Capital of America.” But you could have been so much more … naked. (Thanks to Darren Benson for the protip.) source
