U.S.: Guns around the White House: One week, two incidents

  • Friday Two vehicles were spotted in the midst of a gunfight within a relatively close distance to the White House — within a few hundred yards of the building. An AK-47 was recovered.
  • Tuesday White House officials found a single bullet that had been fired at the White House itself, but was held off by ballistic glass. Officials don’t know if Friday’s incident was the cause for the find. source

World: Syria’s Assad vows no firing on protests

  • So, would you trust this guy? That’s the question facing members of the Syrian opposition. Syria has been a hellish place for those protesting the Bashar al-Assad government of late, as live rounds have been fired into protests, many have been captured (and, given the human rights record there, almost certainly tortured), and even army soldiers who’ve refused to unload on civilians have been shot dead by the state police. Now, however, the opposition says that Assad has vowed there won’t be such attacks made on a planned protest on Friday. Forgive us if we’re skeptical, but Assad’s brutality is a cat that was let out of the bag a long time ago. source

U.S.: Did gunman in DC area with very specific agenda repeat himself?

  • To our friend shooting at various Marine-related buildings in the DC Area: You should stretch out. We understand that you may have something against the Marines. That’s why you’ve shot at all those Marine-related buildings. But you’re starting to repeat yourself. Last night, someone shot at the National Museum of the Marine Corps for the second time in a month. (Just a guess, but: It was probably you.) But you should shoot other empty military-related buildings in the middle of the night for no good reason. That’s right, buddy, leave a bigger paper trail so that the police can figure out who you are and why you’re on such a bizarre caper against buildings that didn’t do anything to you. (Also, just to help police: Consider leaving a business card.) source
