U.S.: President Obama argues for less imported oil

  • 25% the percentage of global oil production that’s consumed by the U.S.
  • 2% the percentage of global oil reserves under the control of the U.S.
  • 1/3rd the reduction in fuel imports Obama wants for the next decade source
  • » So, how do we get there? The nitty-gritty policy proposals President Obama spoke on seemed hauntingly familiar, with emissions standards, electric car production, (safety reviewed) nuclear power and natural gas all figuring into his pitch. These are all worthwhile possible answers or supplements to reduce foreign fuel imports, but will Congress has the desire, or failing that the collective will, to act on issues they’ve to this point been pretty willing to pass on? Especially with a Republican-led House, whose leadership is demonstrably opposed to emissions standards, it’s a worrisome possibility that this effort, like so many over the last thirty years, will fall by the wayside.

World: Ahmadinejad pretends to be willing to work on nuclear thing

  • If the other party is determined and committed to law, justice and respect, there is hope that in the next sessions good results would be achieved.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Blaming the people on the other side of the table for failing to make a nuclear deal happen. Because, let’s face it, he has to give a little bit of rope for the rest of the world to pull on, or they’re going to slip and fall – and never believe Ahmadinejad’s dishonesty again. source

World: World diplomats don’t learn: Iran knows your silly fuel-swap games

  • then In 2009, world powers were trying to get Iran to export its supply of low-grade uranium to be turned into higher-grade fuel. Iran pretended they were into it but eventually rebuffed the offer.
  • now With a little less creativity than last time, world leaders are trying to do something similar with Iran’s now-much-larger supply (it’s like three times larger now). Iran, of course, continues to play coy. source

World: Looks like Ahmadinejad finally got the chance to see “Avatar”

Just kidding. In all seriousness, he told Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization to start producing fuel for a research reactor in Tehran. The West is gonna love that. source

Politics: Barack Obama made a really funny joke on Letterman tonight

  • It’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election.
  • President Barack Obama • Talking to David Letterman tonight about claims of racism fueling dislike of his policies. A killer quip if there was one. In the interview, Obama instead suggests that what’s fueling the fire of distrust against Obama is the fact that he’s making big changes – changes he had to make because of the recession. • source

U.S., World: The gifts just keep on coming from Venezuela and Hugo Chavez

  • book As we noted the other day, Eduardo Galeano is a happy old man, as his 38-year-old critique of Western imperialism, “Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent,” is still a top-15 book on Amazon a week after Hugo Chavez handed the book to Obama.
  • island Well now, Hugo Chavez has upped the ante, giving New Jersey … wait for it … an island! Petty’s Island, located between Philly and Camden, N.J., is owned by Citgo, the fuel company run by Venezuela, and features a couple of bald eagles. He wants to show us his love, guys! <3 source
