Politics: Christine O’Donnell: The Establishment set me up! Seriously!

  • I have faith that our supporters and the general public will see right through these thug tactics. This is simply an Establishment trick to stop the anti-establishment Tea Party movement in its tracks.
  • Christine O’Donnell • Regarding reports that the FBI is investigating her for election fraud. Protip: Have a second career besides being a candidate so you can ensure that you aren’t spending campaign donations on rent and other expenses. It’s wasteful, Christine. We like Wonkette’s take on the matter: “Isn’t it strange how a person who has earned no income over the past half-decade and yet is not living on the streets could be charged with any kind of financial fraud? Same old lamestream FBI bullshit.” True ’nuff. source

Culture: Conrad Black on prison: Prison really sucks and it’s unfair

  • It had been an interesting experience, from which I developed a much greater practical knowledge than I had ever had before of those who had drawn a short straw from the system; of the realities of street level American race relations; of the pathology of incorrigible criminals; and of the wasted opportunities for the reintegration of many of these people into society.
  • Formerly jailed newspaper magnate Conrad Black • In an article for the National Post discussing his time in prison. Short version: Prison isn’t a lot of fun and he learned a lot about what prisoners go through on the other side of the situation. He noted the nature of some of the injustices, specifically the disparity of cocaine versus crack-cocaine sentencing. He described prisoners as  “an ostracized, voiceless legion of the walking dead; they are no one’s constituency.” As it is, though, he learned a lot in his 28 months and 18 days. Is there a chance he’ll return? It’s possible; he’s only out on bail. source

Biz: Bernie’s in the slammah, swagga like a ROCK STAR

  • Their impression almost unanimously was that he landed like a rock star. He was a celebrity, he had groupies, he had people clamoring for his advice, and his autograph.
  • New York magazine reporter Steve Fishman • Talking about his profile piece on Bernie Madoff, which seems to portray him like a Jay-Z like super-celeb for bilking all those rich people out of their money. Madoff reveled in his newfound infamy, and one inmate puts like so: “If I’d lived that well for 70 years, I wouldn’t care that I ended up in prison.” Let’s face it. Is he wrong? source

World: Protip for Hamid Karzai: Abdullah Abdullah needed for a runoff

  • Afghanistan’s leader is currently dealing with an angry challenger. When an election has widespread fraud, and you’re the biggest victim of the fraud, of course you’d be angry, right? Well, Abdullah Abdullah is so angry about it right now that he’s threatening not to be a part of the runoff. A runoff, by the way, that the U.S. had to pressure Hamid Karzai to take part in. In other news, who’s dressing as Hamid Karzai for Halloween this year? source

World: Hamid Karzai has too much power over the Afghan election

  • He can somehow create an electoral deadlock. Despite the fact that the UN looked into the results of the election, and they’re designed to be an impartial third party, a UN-led probe into vote-rigging is on hold in Afghanistan because Karzai’s upset. Why? Because the UN’s throwing out questionable votes, which will cause a runoff election. And Karzai, for obvious reasons, doesn’t want a runoff. Karzai better deal with it, because he could be affecting whether the U.S. puts more troops in his country by fighting the electoral fraud charges. source

Biz: Enron’s Jeffrey Skilling gets a Supreme Court hearing for his trial

  • Man, if he gets off … Skilling, the Enron executive who didn’t have the, uh, fortune of dying just before getting sentenced, will get his day in front of the Supreme Court due to questions about the judgment. Skilling says the legal claim that he deprived the company of “honest services” is invalid, and notes that an argument that he did it for personal gain was never made. So off to the top court it goes. source
