Politics: Eleanor Holmes Norton: Screwing over DC “frosting” on budget deal

  • Having given the Republicans more than I am sure any Democrat in the House ever envisioned, it was surely unnecessary to pile on the District of Columbia and give them some frosting on what was already a very big cake. All along they said it is about ‘spending, spending, spending.’ How does the District of Columbia get into that equation?
  • DC’s House Delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton • Offering a pretty blunt take on the DC-damaging riders in the latest budget bill. One blocks the city from using its own money to fund abortions. The other allows funding for controversial school vouchers — without any consultation from local officials. (Vince Gray probably knows more than Boehner does on this; just a thought.) These are policies the city doesn’t want, but have to take because they’re technically part of the federal government. Norton has the most demeaning job in Congress. She has to basically take and take all these awful policies that get shoved down her constituents’ residents’ throats, and all she can give back is her opinion. She doesn’t even have a horse to jockey in the matter. source

Politics: Eleanor Holmes Norton tells Congress to go to hell

  • We are absolutely outraged. This is the functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians. It’s time that the District of Columbia told the Congress to go straight to hell.
  • Washington D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton • Expressing her rage at a rider on the latest bill proposed by Republicans in the negotiations to prevent a government shutdown. The rider would prohibit the District of Columbia from spending money on abortion services for low-income women. While this sort of rhetoric is very rankling to anybody with a differing opinion, the extent to which federal control encroaches on Washington D.C. is a touchy subject beyond simply the realm of abortion. The city belongs to no state, and thus has no voting rights (and thus no representation) in Congress. Holmes Norton is a “Delegate,” not a “Representative” — while her job description is roughly the same, she explicitly cannot cast any votes. While there’s always something said for keeping one’s cool, it’s not hard to see why she’s up in arms about this. source

Politics: Missy Smith, campaign ads, and reaching the bottom of the barrel

  • So, recently, this lady has been clogging DC airwaves with the worst ads. We saw them a few times over the weekend. Missy Smith’s been paying money to show aborted fetuses in as disgusting a light as possible, during daytime hours. (Click here if you’re curious.) And because she’s in cahoots with Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, she knew that she legally could force the TV stations to show them. In fact, she ran for Congress in DC (where she’s destined to lose, because Eleanor Holmes Norton is very popular) specifically to run these ads on television. The stations have had to put lengthy, 15-second warnings in front of the ads. And they’ve forced us to consider a few things:
  • Culture wars not over In the age of Obama, despite all the negative energy that’s been popping up, one positive of it is that certain social movements (specifically gay rights) have been looking more and more likely to go mainstream. But as this ad proves, certain wedge issues won’t go away quite that easily.
  • Playing to our divisions Jon Stewart’s twelve-minute rant at the very end of yesterday’s “Rally To Restore Sanity” was pretty much made for people like Smith and ads like this one. Most people aren’t like Smith, but people like Smith use stunts like these to dominate our dialogue. Don’t let these stunts define us, fellow Americans.
  • The bar has lowered In a political advertising season that started with Demon Sheep and has only gotten worse from there (barring Dale Peterson), it makes sense that we end it with an ad that literally shows aborted fetuses during daytime television. Those earlier ads set the stage for us to hit bottom. Now, here we are. source

Politics: Sharpton’s “Reclaim the Dream” fails to escape Glenn Beck’s shadow

  • People are clear in what Dr. King’s dream was about, and we will not react to those who try to distort that dream.
  • The Rev. Al Sharpton • Speaking at an event in honor of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech today. The event, which was held at a D.C. high school instead of the National Mall (Glenn Beck’s peeps got that spot) worked as a giant reaction to the Beck event, rather than an event of its own merit. Which is to say that they kept bringing up the Beck event in various ways. “When I look at my television, I don’t see the King crowd of blacks and whites together,” said D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. NAACP leader Ben Jealous brought it up explicitly: “We are not sure what the message of the Beck rally is, since he told them to leave their signs at home.” Honestly, Sharpton’s event shouldn’t be a reaction; it should be a celebration. source
