Culture: New York: Please stop making examples of celebrities like Lil Wayne

  • First Plaxico, now the rap star. Not cool. Thanks in part to New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the state has some of the strictest laws on the books when it comes to gun possession. Plaxico Burress at least shot off his gun before he got a two-year jail sentence for gun possession. Unfortunately for Lil Wayne, though, he was nicked with “attempted gun possession” and will face as much as a year. As a non-resident of the state, he was unaware of the law, but simply being unaware of the law is not a good enough reason. Not that we’re suggesting he should’ve been in possession of the gun, but jail time for this is unbelievable. For shame, New York state. source

Culture: Miley Cyrus: Blame gossip sites for my departure from Twitter

  • Everything that I type, Everything that I do, some gossip site makes it news.
  • Miley Cyrus • Discussing the nature of her leaving Twitter. It’s an unexpected departure, mainly because she did it so regularly and had so many fans. But an unintended side effect of those tweets was the way that the more direct, honest ones – about her weight, for example – turned into gossip. If some gossip site were talking about our site’s weight all the time, we’d be uncomfortable too. Instead, we have Christwire (hilariously) suggesting that our site’s founder is a criminal. • source

Culture: Dear Tom Delay’s stress-fractured feet: De-stress-fracture yourself

  • This is great television. And because you decided to get all uppity, Tom Delay’s feet, now Tom Delay won’t be able to do what he does best: Dance like an L-list celebrity on “Dancing With the Stars.” It certainly isn’t being a politician. source

Music: RIP DJ AM, a.k.a. Adam Goldstein, dead at 36 of a drug overdose

DJ AM
  • Dead too soon. Fought off death already. 11 months ago, DJ AM would have been one of the luckiest men alive. Today, he’s a man who couldn’t cheat death twice. Adam Goldstein, initially a member of Crazy Town and later a disc jockey to the stars who played numerous private events, was found dead in his New York apartment of a drug overdose today. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Goldstein (and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker) miraculously survived a plane crash in September in which everyone else died. A shocking and sad story for sure. source

Culture, Tech: The Internet wasn’t ready for Michael Jackson’s death at all

  • one Twitter’s traffic doubled in just a short period, and Jackson’s death nearly made Iran a forgotten memory on the site. Facebook had triple the traffic.
  • two The L.A. Times site, which was the first reputable source (sorry TMZ) to confirm his death, had over two million pageviews in just an hour.
  • three But most telling might be the long-running AOL Instant Messenger. They went down 40 minutes, and called the day “a seminal moment in Internet history.” source

Culture: Rihanna nude photos hit the Web. Hasn’t she suffered enough?

  • She was just starting to return to the public eye. Rihanna, who just had a personal nightmare in the form of a very public domestic violence saga featuring ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, apparently showed up on an image hosting Web site in a series of nude photos (which we will not link, by the way) and immediately trended on Twitter search. Sigh. First Carrie Prejean, then Rihanna. source
