Politics: How Dr. Laura fell out of favor and ended her show in only a week

  • 08/10 Dr. Laura took a phone call from a black caller in an interracial marriage that involved using the “N” word nearly a dozen times.
  • 08/11 After getting ripped on or the call, she apologized, saying that her response to the caller was the “wrong thing.” Sorry about that.
  • 08/16 The liberal blog Media Matters for America decided to go after her show’s sponsors over the comments. They drew blood.
  • 08/17 Unlike Glenn Beck, Dr. Laura folded immediately, announcing on “Larry King Live” that her show was ending. source

U.S.: Will Alabama have a black governor for the first time ever?

  • NO and Artur Davis’ loss tonight was downright brutal source
  • 65% challenger Ron Sparks’ polling
    results so far tonight
  • 35% Davis’ result with 58 percent of precincts reporting
  • And the saddest news of the night: Dale “Thugs and Criminals” Peterson, who is running for Alabama Agriculture Commissioner on the back of an awesome commercial, came in third in a field of three for the Republican nomination. That sucks.

Biz: Some black job-seekers have to hide their race on their resume

  • If they’re going to X me, I’d like to at least get in the door first.
  • Job-seeker Johnny R. Williams • Describing the trouble he’s had landing a job interview – something he thinks is happening because he’s black, not because his resume sucks. As a result, he’s made an effort to scrub his resume of anything that identifies him as a black man – that membership to the African-American business students association? Deleted. Black male college graduates face an unemployment rate nearly twice as high as white grads of a similar education level, and many experts think black-sounding names may be a turn-off for potential employers. source

U.S.: Cambridge police will forget about the Harvard professor arrest

  • I think both parties were wrong. I think that’s fair to say. It wasn’t Professor Gates’ best moment. and it was not the Cambridge Police Department’s best moment.
  • Cambridge Police Department Spokeswoman Kelly Downes • Regarding the drama that both the police department and Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. went through after Gates was arrested last week for disorderly conduct. While Downes says there was “probable cause” to arrest the professor, both the police department and Gates are looking to get the drama behind them. Gates’ arrest stirred up lots of criticism due to the fact that he’s black and the circumstances appeared to be racial profiling. • source

Politics, U.S.: Obama sez black role models aren’t good enough

  • They might think they’ve got a pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be the next LeBron or Lil Wayne. I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking at last night’s NAACP 100th anniversary dinner. The president has largely avoided taking on issues of race in his presidency, letting his actions speak for themselves, but spoke openly about the racial divide at the dinner, saying “the pain of discrimination is still felt in America.” But of all the comments he made, this one strikes the hardest. Obama isn’t saying that either LeBron or Lil Wayne are bad on their own, but they set terrible examples for children. You don’t want to lean too hard on the “scientists or engineers” angle here, but he has a solid point. • source

Politics: ESPN.com columnist: Don’t compare gay rights to civil rights

  • This is one of the main reasons why so many blacks bristle at the comparison of the two movements – everybody wants to sing the blues, nobody wants to live them.
  • ESPN.com columnist LZ Granderson • In a column on CNN comparing the gay rights movement to the struggle that blacks have faced. Granderson, an openly gay black male sportswriter (which is a pretty specific social segment), takes the movement to task for leaving out black people and complaining that President Barack Obama isn’t moving quickly enough. Granderson has a long history of insightful comments on gay rights, by the way. • source
