U.S.: Obama handles the Notre Dame abortion hot potato with ease

  • When we open up our hearts and our minds to those who may not think precisely like we do or believe precisely what we believe, that’s when we discover at least the possibility of common ground.
  • President Barack Obama • Who deftly handled a fairly tense situation speaking at the University of Notre Dame, which as a Catholic institution doesn’t support abortion, by asking those involved in protests around his visit to find common points of agreement. Obama is pro-choice, which meant that he became a lightning rod when the university picked him as commencement speaker. With the speech, Obama seemed to soften the protests against him. • source

Politics, U.S.: Obama’s flop on terror tribunals ticks off the hardcore liberals

  • In one swift move, Obama both backtracks on a major campaign promise to change the way the United States fights terrorism and undermines the nation’s core respect for the rule of law.
  • Amnesty International executive director Larry Cox • On one of Obama’s most unpopular decisions thus far, after, you know, getting a dog. Seriously, it seems like very few liberal-leaning groups dig this decision. LIBERAL RAGE! ROAR! • source

U.S.: Obama backtracks on that whole military tribunal thing

  • Background Bush got the drama police on his back because of the harsh interrogation techniques his administration used on Guantanamo Bay detainees. Obama said he would kill them off as a campaign promise. Liberal-leaning groups supported him. source

  • What’s next? Today Obama announced that his administration would revive the tribunals – with significant changes. Harsh interrogation techniques wouldn’t be used, they’d be only used for the 13 Sept. 11 suspects in custody, but with more rigid legal protections in place. source

  • But why? The likely root cause for the backtrack is the need for congressional support. Obama hopes to have legislation signed by the time a freeze on the cases expires. D.C. legislators like this just a wee bit more than Amnesty International. source

U.S.: Obama’s commencement speech at Arizona State left ’em fawning

  • I come to confirm that one’s title, even a title like president of the United States, says very little about how well one’s life has been led — and that no matter how much you’ve done, or how successful you’ve been, there’s always more to do, always more to learn, and always more to achieve.
  • President Barack Obama • Sideswiping the controversy of not getting an honorary degree from Arizona State University to make a killer speech about never resting on one’s laurels or one’s title. This Obama guy knows what he’s doing – think we should give him an honorary degree? • source

Politics, U.S.: Key line from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

  • I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight. He needs a good waterboarding – that’s what he needs.
  • Wanda Sykes • Who managed to bring back some of the edge of Stephen Colbert’s routine a couple of years ago to the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. She took jabs at everyone, Obama included. No offense to Rush Limbaugh, but we’d rather hear rips on him than see awful Bush impersonators. • source

Biz, U.S.: Obama wants a credit card regulatory bill on his desk ASAP

  • There is no time for delay. We need a durable and successful flow of credit in our economy, but we can’t tolerate profits that depend upon misleading working families. Those days are over.
  • President Barack Obama • In his weekly radio address. Obama wants a bill that limits some of the more predatory aspects of the credit industry. The Credit Card Holders’ Bill of Rights, currently waiting on a vote in the Senate after it passed the House, is such a bill, but the banking industry is fighting it. Obama wants a bill on his desk by Memorial Day. • source

Biz, U.S.: Obama: The Cayman Islands are nice, but not as a tax haven

  • I want to see our companies remain the most competitive in the world. But the way to make sure that happens is not to reward our companies for moving jobs off our shores or transferring profits to overseas tax havens.
  • Barack Obama • Putting the fear of God yesterday into large corporations who have done this for years in an attempt to avoid U.S. taxes. Obama plans to put billions of dollars to work over the next decade – much of it in the form of IRS employees – to prevent tax havens. • source
