Politics: Why does Joe Lieberman hate America? (Sarcasm intended)

  • Since, really, 2006, Lieberman has felt alienated from his caucus, and he’s grown more conservative. He does not care about liberals, who tried to drum him out of office in 2006; he seems to enjoy poking them in the eye.
  • Atlantic political writer Marc Ambinder • Describing the nature of Joe Lieberman’s recent attacks on the health care bill. Ultimately, he’s still smarting from his near-loss in the 2006 Connecticut Senate race, so he appears to be playing this as his comeuppance. Ambinder suggests that the ultimate 60th vote of this will not be Lieberman – who appears to be trying to stonewall this, privately giving a thumbs-up while publicly trashing it – but Olympia Snowe, who will require less work to win over. Perhaps once everyone realizes that, this will get easier. source

Politics: Andrew Sullivan sez the Baucus bill could be a “game-changer”

  • If healthcare reform actually lowers the deficit over the long run according to the CBO, then resistance on that score should crumble. That’s why this bill may have more legs than it first appeared. It will appeal to fiscal worry-warts like yours truly. It will be manna for Independents.
  • Atlantic columnist Andrew Sullivan • Discussing the implications of the Baucus health care bill, which he says might pull off the magic trick of giving the working poor reasonable health care AND not raising the deficit. Sullivan, who has a pretty strange mix of political ideologies, suggests that if conservatives don’t support a bill like this, “then the joke in the end is on them.” • source

Offbeat, World: This guy must’ve gotten lonely rowing across the Atlantic alone

  • I’m definitely suffering from exposure to the elements and I’ve lost 20 pounds. This is definitely different from my life at home.
  • Paul Ridley • A 25-year-old dude who rowed across the Atlantic to raise money for cancer research. It took him 88 days; some days he’d row up to 12 hours. Along the way, he had to deal with a lot of equipment failure, seasickness (because, hey, it’s everywhere!) and sores (obviously). He should’ve just saved himself a bunch of time and played the imaginary “Wii Rowing” game we just made up instead. • source
