  • Mitt Romney’s campaign manager, Matt Rhoades • Offering a bit of a rip with a FOIA request sent to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s office, in response to a story released earlier today that claims that the former Massachusetts governor’s staff deleted e-mails before Romney left office. The key phrase in that statement above? “Opposition research arm.” Someone, please, make a T-shirt with that phrase on it. source

U.S.: Day of Action: Protesters arrested for sitting at base of Brooklyn Bridge

  • 80+ arrested at Brooklyn Bridge during today’s protests source
  • » The second notable set of Brooklyn Bridge arrests: In something of a return to its roots for the Occupy movement, a number of protesters got arrested while attempting to head towards the Brooklyn Bridge, which mimics a protest from during the early part of the Occupy movement, in which over 700 people got arrested by the NYPD for walking on the iconic bridge. But the tone during today’s “Day of Action” protests was different — those who got arrested did so for sitting at the base of the bridge, while many others stuck to the pedestrian path, staying off the road.

U.S.: Suspected White House shooter charged with “attempted assassination”

  • Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, the man apprehended as the suspected source of the gunfire directed at the White House last week, will face a charge of “attempted assassination.” This is a curious case for reasons of proximity — President Obama wasn’t in the White House, or even on the East Coast, when the shots were fired. That said, whether or not this qualifies as an assassination attempt in a legal sense (we’re not lawyers, so any clarification would be helpful) may have to do with whether Ortega-Hernandez actually knew that, or believed the President to be sitting in the White House when he opened fire. source

U.S.: CA’s Prop. 8 proponents win State Supreme Court challenge

  • And The fight over gay marriage rolls on: The California Supreme Court has ruled that opponents of gay marriage may defend the state’s ban, better known as Proposition 8, in court proceedings. Typically the task of defending such a state initiative falls on officials like the governor or attorney general, but both Jerry Brown and Kamala Harris have refused to do so, voicing opposition to the marriage restriction. This is broadly viewed as a table-setting sort of ruling — there’s a growing air of inevitability that the gay marriage issue is bound for the U.S. Supreme Court, where a ruling could impact the institution all across the country. source

U.S.: Occupy Wall Street descends on Wall Street on two-month anniversary

  • 50+ people arrested near Wall Street this morning source
  • » An attempt to prevent trading: A number of protesters, many from Zuccotti Park, tried to prevent traders from reaching the floor of Wall Street, but trading started at the usual 9:30 a.m. despite this. Protesters held up signs that said such things as “Tear down this Wall Street” and shouted phrases like “We aren’t afraid of your nightsticks,” in reference to the NYPD. “We’re not going to go away,” one protester, Davie Field, told the New York Times. “You can slash our tents and kick us out of the park, but we’ll keep coming back every day.”

Politics: Thousands of OWS’ library books missing after raid

  • Looking to check out a book while you Occupy? Until the dismantling of the Zuccotti Park encampment earlier this week that was a fairly simple proposition, thanks to the “People’s Library,” which was some 5,000 volumes strong. The library’s entire setup was confiscated by police during the raid, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office insisted via Twitter that the books would be available to be picked up today. The Occupiers charged with retrieving the books were incensed to find, however, that thousands of their books were missing or destroyed. Several laptops kept around the library are missing, as well; the proprietors of the OWS Library Twitter condemned Mayor Bloomberg thusly: “So @MikeBloomberg you lied, so where is the #OWSLibrary? Because it’s not at the Sanitation Garage.” source

Politics: Barney Frank condemns Newt Gingrich on Freddie Mac claim

  • There are two ‘L’ words that apply with Newt, lobbyist and liar. Mr. Gingrich was reprimanded for lying. He has a history of doing that and this is nonsense that he was being paid $1.6 million and maybe more to talk about history.
  • Rep. Barney Frank • Pulling no punches in his condemnation of Newt Gingrich, over Gingrich’s claim that his $1.6 million in income from Freddie Mac was earned not as a lobbyist, but as a historian. Frank and Gingrich are former colleagues in the House, and it doesn’t seem they terribly care for one another — at a previous debate, Gingrich suggested Frank and financial reform law co-sponsor Chris Dodd should be jailed. source

Culture: New developments in Jerry Sandusky child sex assault case

  • Alleged Sandusky victim will testifyBen Andreozzi, the defense attorney for one of Jerry Sandusky’s eight alleged victims, has stated that his client intends to testify to being “severely sexually assaulted.” Andreozzi says Sandusky’s recent TV interview hardened his client’s resolve: “He is feeling more comfortable about going through with this. The comments maybe backfired.”
  • Police contradict McQueary’s Email A recently released email sent by former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary claimed he had contacted the police after believing he’d witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a young boy in the Penn State locker room showers. He did not specify which department he meant, but both campus and local police departments have denied receiving any such report. source

World: Arab League may impose economic sanctions on Syria

  • 3 day deadline for end to violence in Syria, Arab League says source
  • » Suspended and sanctioned? That’s the possibility facing Syria in the days to come. It was last Saturday that the Arab League voted to suspend Syria today if there was not a halt to the brutal violence and oppression by the government (Syria had already flagrantly ignored an agreement with the Arab League to facilitate this on November 3rd). Should the violent oppression not stop within three days, the price would be economic sanctions imposed by the League, which could have significant consequences for the Syrian citizenry as well.

Culture: Woman drops paternity suit against Justin Bieber

  • DNA, babies, and Bieber: Mariah Yeater, a young woman who accused Justin Bieber of being the father of her child, has withdrawn her paternity suit against the young star. Bieber had vocally denied the claims, and said he would submit to a DNA test once back in the U.S. from touring. When it was revealed Yeater had initially (and falsely) insisted her boyfriend was the child’s father, this outcome wasn’t too hard to see coming. (Photo courtesy of “iloveJB123”) source
