Politics: U.S. government anger over Wikileaks gets much louder

  • I would hope that those who are responsible for this would, at some point in time, think about the responsibility that they have for lives that they’re exposing and the potential that’s there and stop leaking this information.
  • Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen • Saying WITH EMPHASIS that if Wikileaks releases the diplomatic cables it has, it could endanger lives. Other government officials, including ambassadors, are complaining loudly too. The question, of course, is whether these cables, which are expected to be released today, will be nearly as damaging as they suggest. It’s pretty likely they will be – some of the stuff revealed in the Iraq and Afghan War leaks was a bit retready. This could be new ground. Or not. source

Politics: Obama’s own grandmother offers up “Obama’s a Muslim” ammo

  • birthers The president’s biggest doubters believe Obama is a Muslim for some reason, and that he wasn’t born in the U.S. despite the fact that he has a birth certificate. (La la la, they can’t hear you!)
  • grandma The president’s own grandmother, 88-year-old Sarah Omar of Kenya, wants him to convert to Islam: “I prayed for my grandson Barack to convert to Islam,” she said. That should freak birthers out. source

Politics: Sarah Palin invokes class warfare in ripping Bushes

  • Let’s say you’re Sarah Palin and you just got criticized by a former first lady. How would you handle the criticism? Well, in Sarah Palin’s case, this is how: “I don’t want to concede that we have to get used to this kind of thing, because i don’t think the majority of Americans want to put up with the blue-bloods — and i want to say it with all due respect because I love the Bushes — the blue bloods who want to pick and chose their winners instead of allowing competition.” She said that on Laura Ingraham’s show yesterday. So, to be clear, she just ripped on a former president and first lady for being privileged because they suggested she was unqualified to be president. Check. source

Politics: People all excited that Tom DeLay got convicted and stuff

  • You cannot wipe the grin off my face with a stick of dynamite. I think it’s important that he has to face the consequences of his actions.
  • Blogger Susan DuQuesnay Bankston of Richmond, Texas • Exclaiming her utter joy about Tom DeLay’s conviction for money laundering yesterday. DeLay, who left Congress under a firestorm of controversy in 2005, was convicted of illegally channeling $190,000 to GOP candidates in Texas with a money swap. The money helped lead to a Texas legislature that was strongly GOP, which helped the former House Majority Leader push through a redistricting plan that was advantageous to DeLay politically. What a plan! source

Politics: Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry wants to scar your eyes in 2012

  • Great, just what we need. More of these ads. (just a link to another article, we swear!) To our friends outside of DC this election cycle, you may have something to not look forward to next cycle. Missy Smith, a protégé of noted anti-abortion activist Randall Terry, ran some incredibly disturbing ads of dead fetuses on television just before the election. And while they weren’t necessarily family viewing, they could run during family hours because Terry had read up on campaign advertising laws. While Smith only earned six percent of the vote in November, here adsy got lots of people talking – so many that Terry plans to take the campaign national in 2012, getting more candidates involved and running for president so he can air the ads during the Super Bowl. Great. source

Politics: Norm Coleman to Joe Miller: Pot calls kettle, says “don’t do this”

  • Without criticizing Joe Miller, I would offer him advice. I think it’s the same advice that Fred Thompson and others have offered recently. It should be time to move on.
  • Former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman • Offering Joe Miller the kind of advice that Coleman himself probably needed in the wake of 2008’s Minnesota Senate campaign, which he lost to Al Franken after approximately six months of fighting tooth and nail. (Though, granted, Coleman’s tally was much tighter – literally hundreds of votes) The fact that Coleman is saying that Joe Miller should call it a day in his race against Lisa Murkowski offers a lot of heft which it otherwise wouldn’t have. source

Politics: Obama ensures us that he’s not thinking about Sarah Palin

  • I don’t think about Sarah Palin. … Obviously Sarah Palin has a strong base of support in the Republican Party and I respect those skills. But I spend most of my time right now on how I can be the best possible president.
  • President Barack Obama • Making sure to emphasize that he’s not in campaign mode for the next two years. It’s notable he mentions Sarah Palin, though, because that’s someone who probably will be. source

Politics: Sarah Palin, circa 1988: For a newscaster, her accent’s pretty thick

  • OK guys, next time we talk about Sarah Palin’s dislike of journalists or how she’s gonna clean up the field of journalism, or how all Katie Couric is biased against her or something, let’s keep in mind this chestnut from 1988, where Palin, as sportscaster, shows her chops as a journalist. For some reason, we still prefer Katie Couric after all of this. (thanks nbclocalsource

Politics, U.S.: Who do bookies think will be the next President?

  • 50:1 odds of a Donald Trump presidency source
  • » Pundits, shmundits. If you want to know how people really think elections will turn out, best turn to the betting markets, where people actually pay a price for bad predictions. Chris Good at The Atlantic scoured three betting sites, and tallied the odds they gave various politicians of becoming the next POTUS. Obama is at the top at all three sites; bettors are split on whether Romney or Palin is the second most likely. Frankly, we’re skeptical of the inclusion of some names (is anybody really expecting Joe the Plumber to run for president?), but hey, it’s fun to see where people put their money.

Politics, U.S.: Gay rights advocates win tiny, tiny, tiny victory

  • plea Gay rights groups asked the Pentagon to expedite its release of its study on the effects of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
  • response Defense Secretary Bob Gates agreed, and bumped up the release of the report…by one day. One whole day! source
